to their faith in his description
of their journey from Indiana
to Atlanta in 1849: “We made
this trip in two two-horse wag
ons. . After we crossed the
.Ohio River we did not sleep
in a house but one time and
that was because we feared a
storm, and during the entire
tr^p we rested only two days,
the first because of a sick
horse, the second. . . (because
it was) Yom Kippur.”
Even more significant than
this was the elder Haas’ reason
for temporarily leaving the
South in 1858. to return to
Philadelphia. “He was .making
a comfortable living in New-
nan”, the son explained, “but
he was not satisfied to’ be cut
off all his life from Jewish
surroundings and the means of
living as a Jew. While it was
impossible to keep a kosher
table, there was never a piece
of hog in my father’s house,
nor was milk or butter ever
on the table with meat.”
As early as 1852, Rabbi Jsaac
Leeser had visited Atlanta and
reported that, although “there
is as yet no congregational un
ion in this place. . a few ladi.es
and gentlemen assembled. . .
for prayers.” He advised thefn
on this occasion to get together
with their co-religionists of
Griffin, Newnan, Athens, and
Marietta, “to form a union, to
have at least a Schochet in
common, and meet, at all
events, on the holy days for
public' worship.”
While they did not heed his
advice for another fifteen
years, they did see to it that
their children received formal
instruction in Judaism. During
• the 1850’s, two women conduct--
ed religious school classes- in
their homes. (One of them was •>
Mrs. Aaron Alexander, great
grandmother’ of Cecil A. Alex
ander). During the-Civil War,
a Mrs. Isaacs taught the child
ren “in her humble home
above the store”, and their pa
rents gathered for Holyday
worship in a hired hall.
How did one go about be
ginning a congregation in
1867? It was very much, of a
do-it-yourself affair at first.
After the Rosenfeld wedding
the men held a meeting of or
ganization, supposedly in the .
home of Levi and Sarah Cohen.
They elected a president, L.
L. Levy, and a secretary, Louis
Alexander They set dues at
fifty cents per month to pay
for “rent, fuel and incident
als”, and stipulated that any
surplus funds would go into a
charity account. They began
holding regular sendees in a
rented hall, those members
conducting them who remem
bered enough Hebrew to do so.
Occasionally the president
would deliver a sermon.
