Rabbis to Perform
Weddings Under Bill
LOS ANGELES (JTA)— State
Sen. Anthony Beilenson, Los An
geles Democrat, has introduced a
bill in the California Legislature
authorizing rabbis to perform
weddings in the state.
The language of the present
state law on religious weddings
makes legal, technically, only
weddings performed by ‘‘priests
or ministers of the gospel.” Sen.
Beilenson said that the language
makes weddings performed by
rabbip questionable as to their
legzmty because “priests and
gospels” refer only to Christian
ity.
The Senator’s measure would
add the word “rabbi" to the list
of religious officials qualified to
perform marriages in California.
He said that the term was meant
to cover Jewish clergymen re
gardless of the branch of Judaism
they represent.

Shalom’s Art
Remains Israel’s
TEL AVIV (JTA)—The $15,205,-
000 which the German Atlantic
Line paid for the SS Shalom, the
Israeli luxury liner, did not give
possession to the buyer of religi
ous objects or art pieces in the
liner, Meir Giron, director-general
of Zim Lines, the seller, has de
clared.
He made the report on his re
turn from West Germany where
he concluded arrangements for
the sale of the Israeli flagship,
which is expected to be delivered
to West Germany at the end of
November. He called /the price a
“good” one. The Germaii firm
will re-name the liner Hanseatic.
The issue of art decorations on
the liner arose earlier when Dan
Karavan, an artist who designed
the murals for the Shalom, said
he would demand return of his
murals. He said he did not want
them to decorate a ship which
might carry former Nazis as pas
sengers, adding he would be will
ing to return the fees he was paid
for the murals.
Stop Neo-Nazis
From Propaganda
TORONTO (JTA) — Police
stopped four members of a Tor
onto-based neo-Nazi group from
handing out leaflets bearing swa
stikas because they did not have
a city license to distribute pam
phlets. It was the second time
that the party distributed leaflets
in downtown London, Ontario, a
city of about 100,000 in Western
Ontario.
John Beattie, self-styled leader,
said they will seek a license for
future pamphlet distribution. It
costs $10 at city hall. Beattie said
London has been singled out by
the party as a future stronghold
of party activity. There will be
more leaflets and demonstrations,
he said, in the next three or four
weeks aimed at the city's youth.
