Silver Lining
By BR. SAMUEL SILVER
(A Seven Arts Feature)
The Bishop Sheen!
After becoming celebrated as
a proselytizer par excellence and
then as a great TV personality,
he is now the
Bishop of Roch
ester, New York
and, in the new
stage of his oa-
reer, has become!
an innovator and'
an ecumenist.
As innovator
he appointed as
one of his chief
aides a person involved in
making civil rights more of a
reality in his diocese, and sound
ed a ringing call for religion to
do more about human equality.
As ecumenist, the Bishop twice
appeared in the synagogue made
famous by another glittering
clergyman, Rabbi Philip Bern
stein (the author, the advisor to
Eisenhower right after the war,
the chairman of the American
Zionist Council, etc.)
In his utterances, Bishop Sheen
strikes regular blows for the
cause of interreligious under
standing.
And the Bishop has blossomed
out in a new book which is ab
solutely delightful. Called “The
Quotable Fulton J. Sheen,” pub
lished by Droke House and dis
tributed by Grosset and Dunlap,
the Sheen tone is chockful of
both wisdom and, in an appen
dix, humor.
To tantalize you a bit, here is
one Sheen aphorism among the
more than one thousand includ
ed: “The most bored people in
life are not the underprivileged
but the overprivileged.” Here’s
another. “Why is there more joy
in Heaven for the repentant sin
ner than the righteous? Because
God’s attitude is not judgment
but love.” That's what the Phar
isees, so strongly condemned in
the New Testament, often said.
As for the Bishop’s humor, he
says he gave his seat in a sub
way to a woman because he al
ways respected a woman with a
strap in her hand. He cites the
lady who objected to the preach
er reading from a manuscript
with the plaint, “If he can’t re
member it, how does he expect
us to?” He tells about the girl
who said of a purring cat: “Mom,
the cat went to sleep and left its
engine running.” He calls many
unlikable people “I” specialists.
One thing about the Bishop.
He’s not an ecumaniac. You
know what that is. It’s a person
who thinks any religion is better
than his.
