Red Clay Players
"Jacobi" Provides
Hilarious Fun
Somehow we had expected to
take “Jacobi” seriously and we
sat during the first act offended
by inconsistencies, anachronisms
and some other foibles which
made the plot Incredible.
Somewhere along the way, the
farcical tone shone through In
undisguised satire and the belly
laughs came deep and frequent.
The Atlanta Journal’s Eugene
Moore was certainly succeeding
in mounting a comedy about life
in a small Georgia town. The im
probable accuracy of the actors
only served to highlight the
spoof and provide the audience
of the first “Red Clay Players”
effort with an enjoyable even
ing.
That some of the stereotypes
of a Jewish family were so an-
omolous and ludicrous gave the
competent presentation addi
tional comedy bonuses.
An almost beatnik, Harvard
educated son returning to work
in the family store? A rabbi’s
widow unfamiliar with sophisti
cated cultural values? Sheer com
edy, especially to us.
Throw in such ingredients as a
gossiping cosmetic saleswoman,
Klansmen in the queer tradition
and a local lit’ry figure of quasi
belles lettres and we found our
selves relaxed in side-splitting
fun.
Sid Shier and Doris Blass gave
fine interpretations of their roles,
spectacular in fact in depth and
authenticity. The vignettes of the
saleswoman by La Verne Corne
lias and local literary light by
Betty Anderson were outstanding.
Praise is particularly due Gayle
Clark as the daughter. Her read
ing was excellent though the
role is the weakest in the script.
Kit Riker, formerly with Thea
tre Atlanta, provided experienced
direction for this production.
The play at the Pocket Thea
tre on Courtland Street will run
Wednesday through Saturday to
September 30 wiith the exception
of September 29.
The Red Clay Players has been
founded as a regional type thea
ter and will produce plays re
flecting this region.

To attempt to describe the
wonder and awe of the Land of
Israel is a task that I find im
possible. A visitor to this country
is immediately engulfed in a feel
ing of exhilaration, and pride. The
Israel that I am speaking of is
an Israel that has just emerged
victorious from a war that threat
ened her very existence, an Israel
that has proved to the world that
she has a right to live in peace,
and will defend that right at all
cost, an Israel that acts as a
homeland for Jewish people
everywhere, an Israel that, in
only nineteen years has grown
into one of the most successful
countries in the world today.
This is the Israel in which I now
find myself, and what a wonder
ful experience and feeling it is
to be here.
There are many elements in
volved in making Israel a coun
try of countries. I have found that
the most impotrant element is the
people here. Israelis are people
who have suffered many hard
ships and are now able to live
as they wish in a land of free
dom and tolerance. However, the
fact that many have lived lives
of torture and hardship is no bar
rier at all. I find that Israelis
are always willing to talk to a
visitor and help him in any way
they can. I once missed the bus
in the large city of Tel Aviv and
began to panic because I only
had an hour to return to our
hotel. Before I could turn around,
I found myself on the handle
bars of a bicycle. A friendly Is
raeli was giving me a ride to
the next bus stop where I could
catch another bus. This, person
had realized immediately my
trouble and acted to help me
without my even having to ask.
This is not a rare story at all
in this country. Such are the
children of Israel. It is not dif
ficult at all to understand why
this country has advanced so
rapidly. The determination and
will to live of these people is
something that I find wonderful
and impressive.
In meeting and speaking to Is
raeli people, I have come to real
ize that the most dominant trait
is their will to live. I spent one
Sabbath in a Chasidic village
about twenty miles south of Tel
Aviv. I stayed in the home of a
Chasid who had only been in Is
rael for seven months. This man
told me of how he was forced to

spend seven years of his life in
a Russian prison, simply because
he had expressed a desire to live
in Israel. Even though this man
spent seven years in a filthy cell,
he was wonderful to me and
stopped at nothing to make me
feel at home. It was truly inspir
ing to see this man pray at their
Sabbath services because he
prayed with a passion that
I had never seen before. When
prayers were over, he joined the
others in dancing and the spirit
and joy that was there could be
felt in the very air. When I was
pulled into the dancing I became
a part of something that was
beautiful and will remain with me
for the teat of my life. Perhaps we
Americans can learn something
from the expression of joy and
happiness shown by these Chas
idim.
Many varied things go Into
making this experience the
greatest that I have ever known:
—To stand atop Mount Scopus
and see the city Of Jerusalem for
the first time
—To stand atop the ancient and
historic city of Megiddo and look
out upon the beautiful Jezreel
Valley
—To walk through the bustling
streets of Tel Aviv and become
a part of a big Israeli city
—To ride through captured Syr
ian territory seeing the horror
Georgia Youth ... more .. ...
and runins of war.
—To sit inside a captured Egyp-
tenk and visualize yourself in the
midst of battle.
—To climb atop the fortress of
Massada, thought by experts to
be the most inpregnable fortress
in the world, where Jewish de
fenders held out for three years
and finally killed themselves ra
ther than be taken prisoner by
Roman attackers.
—To swim the Sea of Galilee
and watch the sun slowly sink
into it
—To bathe in the Dead Sea from
the Jordanian side.
—To walk through a filthy Arab
market and observe the everyday
life of Arab workers.
—To stand before the Israeli
flag and think for a moment
about the Jewish people and how
important Israel is to us.
These few incidents, I sincere-
wish could be experienced by all.
I felt many things; I felt clean
liness; I felt filth. I felt jey; I
felt disappointment. But most im
portant, I felt. For the rest of my
life, whatever I do, wherever I
go, the experieenoe of Israel shall
be with me. I would have it no
other way.
