THE SOUTH ON ISRAELITE
Pag* Thraa
Carl Alpert
Says:
HAIFA — Why did the Arab
states, under Nasser’s urging,
choose this particular time to put
the squeeze on Israel and force
the issue to the
point of war'
What made them
believe, apparent
ly, that if it came
they could win?
And why this
year?
I submit my
personal theory.
It is my conten
tion that the So
viet Union Em- Alpert
bassy in Israel
served as eyes and ears for the
Arab world. Nothing of impor
tance occurred in Israel that was
not immediately reported, via
Moscow, to the Arab capitals.
I regret that I was occupied
on the day that Russia broke di
plomatic relations wth Israel,
closed its embassy in Ramath
Gan, destroyed all important
papers, and had its staff leave
the country. I believe that if I
had rummaged around in the
trash bins behind the Embassy
long enough I would have come
up with a soiled, crumpled, but
still legible carbon copy of a re
port to Moscow, from Soviet in
telligence agents in Israel, read
ing substantially as follows:
“Highly Confidential. We here
by submit to Headquarters this
condensed summary of the re
ports we have been submitting
for the past six months. They
prove conclusively, and without
the shadow of a doubt, that Is
rael is on the verge of utter and
complete disintegration. At no
time in the history of the Jew
ish people, since the civil war
which Josephus so vividly des
cribes as racking the defenders
of Jerusalem even while the
Romans were climbing the wells,
has there been such divisiveness.
Just a slight push, and the proud
state of Israel will disintegrate.
“Economically Israel is on the
rocks. Unemployment figures
have mounted astronomically.
There are bread riots, hunger
strikes and mass demonstrations
all over the country. The port
workers have gone on strike. The
radio went off the air as techni
cians struck. Bus transport was
tied up. Bakery workers were
locked out. Labor anarchy reigns.
"Major firms have gone bank
rupt. The Feuchtwanger Bank
has closed. The Somfin Ship
ping Company has failed. The
Rassco Company is in serious
trouble. The flagship of the Israel
merchant marine, the Shalom, has
been sold—and to Germany!
“Not only has immigration
ceased almost completely—but the
tide of emigration has mounted.
Doctors -and other professionals
are abandoning the country in
droves.
“The ethical structure of the
country has collapsed as well. A
prominent judge is on trial for
accepting bribes. Five top offic
ials of the HisUidrut have been
fired for corruption. The State
Controller charges that the Gov
ernment Budget is being spent
without proper supervision.
“The religious fights are worse
than ever. There are riots in the
hospitals over autopsies, and
rocks fly every Sabbath. There
'••as been a rash -of spies, and the
Government has clamped down
censorship on the press with
secret trials and all that goes
with it. The public is up in arms.
“The political warfare is acute.
The Herut party has split within
itself. Mapai and Rafd are at it
hammer and tongs. The Minister
of Police has tried to resign. The
Sephardis and the Ashkenazis are
cn the verge of a civil war. The
universities are rent with scan
dals.
“Purim celebrations were call
ed off because of rain, thunder
storms and even snow. Morale
has sagged to a new Vow.
"And so we summarize: pass
the word along. Israel has lost
all its power and will. It is weak,
physically, morally, spiritually.
The Jews will seize the first op
portunity to kill each other. Tell
Nasser — the time has come —
now!”
There was probably much more
in that wrinkled, dirty piece of
paper which had been misplaced
behind the Russian Embassy, as
anyone who followed the news
from Israel in the pest six months
will recall. Short of the conclu
sions, and some exaggeration, al
most everything written In that
paper was correct.
Russian intelligence had achiev
ed a major coup in this splendid
analysis oi Israel’s internal dis
sension. The picture was accurate
and the conclusions were logical.
One thing they failed to take
into consideration. They were not
dealing with a logical people!
