tney wonder what it is.
Some think it’s a Jewish de-‘
nomination. Others think it’s e
modified traditionalism.
Dr. Kaplan taught theology and
other subjects for a long time
at the Jewish Theological Sem
inary, where Conservative rabbis
are trained, and in all those years
he developed his idea.
He stil) expounds it, with vigor
and with twinkling eyes and
quivering beard. Every American
should watch Dr. Kaplan in ac
tion. It’s a thrill to hear this
elderly man, with almost school-
boyish elan, analyze Jewish life,
and with the vision of a prophet,
polemicize with and pummel his
opponents.
Oh yes, Reconstructionism. Dr.
Kaplan says that Judaism fa
neither race, nation, religion or
culture. It is an amalgam of
them all plus language and com
mon memories and common proj
ects like Zionism.
The pioper term for Judaism,
he says, is a civilization.
Our Jewish communities ought
to be “reconstructed” to give joint
expression to these outlets by
which a Jew can benefit from
his faith and by which Judaism
can enrich the milieu.
Right now, we have anarchy in
Jewish life. A centrally run, de
mocratic set-up would give ord3r
to Jewish community life. What
we now do in the way of giving
central support to Jewish char
ity, we should also do for re
ligious and cultural activities.
So says the sage of our times,
that delicious Dr. Kaplan, who
has had such a profound influ
ence on us that when the his
tory of Jewish life is chronicled
our era may well be referred to
as the Age of Kaplan.

Price of Gasoline
Now at Pre-War Level
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Gasoline
prices have been reduced to the
level they were at preceding the
outbreak of the Arab-Israel war
last June. The price rose sub
stantially when Egyptian forces
seized the heights of Sharm-
El-Sheikh, dominating the Strait
of Tiran, and blocked the passage

Israel Producing
Light Mortar
HAIFA (JTA).—Israel’s MIR*
plants, which produce armaments,
have developed a new, light
weight 120mm mortar, which
weighs only 90 kg by comparison
with the old type which weighed
250 Ye. 't was revealed here. Be
cause of its lighter weight, it was
said the mortar will now be
classified a medium weapon, not
as a heavy weapon as previous
ly.
The new type of mortar is now
in mass production, it was said,
and will be exportable to many
countries, providing millions of
dollars of fresh income for Is
rael. The new mortar will be
capable of using ammunition des
igned for the old tvpe. However,
to avoid diversification, it will
not be used by the Israeli army
as vet. But it can be introduced
without the need for new train
ing.

TT C -Israeli Relotinns
COLD SPRINGS, NY. (JTA)
—The Six-Day War has resulted
in nrofound changes in the re-
lationshins between American
Jews and the Israeli people and,
particularly, between the vouth
of the two countries, the North
American Jewish Council was
told here.
Addressine the three-day con
ference of the council at Sur
prise Lake Camp, Yaacov Morris.
Israeli diplomat and representa
tive of the Jewish Agency, said
that the war had “not only
brought Western Jews back to
Judaism but also brought many
Israelis back to the Jewish peo
ple as well. In terms of the
future.” he added, “this means
that the two-way bridge between
the Jews of Israel and the United
States has been strengthened
. and in some ways rebuilt. There
is now a two-way bridge between
equals.”
Newspaper Warns
Against Extremism
Of ‘Black Power’
BALTIMORE (JTA) — The
Baltimore Sun has warned that
anti-Semitism was being mixed
with Black Power extremism to
create “an indigestible political
stew which, if swallowed, could
be poisonous.”
In an editorial-page column,
Gerald Griffin said that Black
Power advocates had displayed
anti-Semitism “too many times
to be accidental.” He said that
“those who make use of it des
cribe their position as anti-Zion
ist rather than anti-Semitic but
in the context of their resolu-.
tions and literature,; this distinc
tion is not impressive.”
Reference was made to the re
cent “new left” convention in
Chicago with the comment that
“this political mess attempted at
Chicago is as ugly as it is poten
tially poisonous, and its implica
tions should be widely under
stood.”
Extreme black nationalism, the
article said, “promises violence
and destruction.” But when, it
added, l“£T'Jst'"eak of anti-Semit
ism, typically blind and nasty, is
applied to black nationalism,
along with an assortment of Rus
sian, Chinese, and Castroist Com
munism, the product is thorough-
ly. vicious. Whether its fomenters
know whai they are doing, or are
groping in the darkness of their
impassioned ignorance, the re
sult is equally deplorable and
obnoxious.”
Melbourne Students
In Demonstration
CANBERRA, Australia (JTA)
—Jewish university students from
Melbourne and Sydney staged a
demonstration here in front of
the Soviet Embassy, protesting
against anti-Semitism in the So
viet Union and demanding that
the USSR permit its Jews to
emigrate.* The placards carried
by the students proclaimed a
number of slogans Including:
“Let My People Go,” “Down With
Russian - Arab Fascism” “End
Soviet Anti-Semitism’' and “Stop
Arming Arab Fascists.”
With the doors of the Embassy
locked and bolted, a delegation
representing the 120 students was
barred from entry. However, Al
lan Leibler a student at Mel
bourne University and spokes
man for the group, managed to
get to the Soviet consular desk,
leaving there a petition on the
issues addressed to Soviet Pre
mier Alexei N. Kosygin. An angry
Russian came out of the Embas
sy, and returned the petition to
Leibler, declared “we don’t want
anythng to do with you peo
ple."
