End To Terrorism^ caged;
Military Heads Blame Syria
The High Holydays are the
most cherished tradition of the
Jewish people. But the universal
ideals they symbolize—of rever
ence, of self-examination, of pen
itence for deeds done or undone,
of desire to be still worthier —
these are noble values which all
people of good will can esteem.
Mrs. Humphrey and I are
happy to join in warmest greet-
May the sound of the Shofar
usher in fulfillment of ancient
and joyous prophecy. May the
sons and daughters of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob enjoy a year of
blessings. May the nation of Is
rael enjoy lasting peace, so that
she may build, heal and serve.
May friendship and understand
ing overcome discord in the
hearts of the Family of Man.
Cease-Fire Lines, Says Dayan,
Make ‘Ideal’ Borders for Israel
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Gen. Moshe
Dayan, the Israeli Defense Min
ister whose “off-the-cuff* esti
mates of Israeli policy have
agitated the Arab states and dis
turbed diplomats since the Six-
Day War, has given another in
terview which was promptly
construed as a direct threat to
regimes of Israel’s Arab neigh
bors.
incidents along the Suez Canal
could be the result of action by
local commanders or they could
be the result of central govern
ment policy possibly to show the
world that so long a* Israel holds
one bank of the canal, the canal
cannot be operated. This, he said,
would necessitate some action to
force Israel to withdraw from
the area.
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prime
Minister Levi Eshkol declared
during a tour of East Jerusalem
that several of the Arab terror
ist organizations which have or
ganized sabotage acts in Israel
had been broken up and he prom
ised help to all residents of Ju
dea and Samaria in the occupied
west bank who were willing to
cooperate with Israeli authorities.
More than 60 El Fatah terror
ists were captured in one 24-hour
period last week.
Pledging that Israel would
guard vits peace and security
against vthe marauders, the Pre
mier san^he warned the would-be
marauders*some weeks ago. He
added that events of the last few
days, when many terrorists were
wounded or killed in a major
manhunt, should have been taken
seriously.
Gen. Yigal Allon, Israel’s Min
ister of Labor, said that guerrilla
activities against Israel ware war
and “we shall take the necessary
measures to put an and to It by
striking at the perpetrators
themselves and also, if we have
to, at those who are sending
them in." The Minister made this
declaration in a question and ans
wer session at the convention
here of foreign volunteers who
came to the country to aid Israel
during the recent crisis.
Israeli military sources said
that Syria could not disclaim re
sponsibility for the El Fatah and
Palestine Liberation Front under
ground activities in Israel and Is
raeli-held territories. They said
that investigation of more than
a hundred members of the two
organizations recently captured
had established the fact that al
most all of them had gone
through training camps in Syria,
bad been transported in Syrian
Army vehicles, were trained by
Syrian instructors and ha
equipped with Syrian anas and
uniforms.
The Israelis also charged that
the Syrian Army had establish
ed a special headquarters to ac
tivate underground activities to
the Israeli-occupied territories
and in Israel proper and assert
ed that this HQ had direct com
munication with the Syrian Chief
of Staff. They said Major Sayid
Souhil of the Syrian Army di
rected this headquarters and
another Syrian Army officer
bandied the transport ot the sab
oteurs from Syria to Jordan and
from Jordan to tha West Bank.
Two training camps for sabo
teurs were located near Dams*-
cus at Hammeh and Douauha aad
a third near the Lebanese fron
tier at Zabadani, they smarted.

Greetings From The President of Israel
In an interview with the
Army weekly, Bamachaneh, Gen.
Dayan spoke enthusiastically
of the ceasefire lines as “ideal"
and expressed doubts that any
one could establish “more ideal
borders than the present ones.”
He pointed out that, “after all,
crossing the Suez canal means
that we are in the outskirts of
Cairo; crossing the Jordan, we
are near Amman, and just pro
ceeding somewhat north of Kun-
eitra, we shall find ourselves in
Damascus.”
The defense minister said that
recent El Fatah terrorist and
sabotage activities should not be
underestimated but he asserted
that it was illogical and foolish to
compare them to the guerrilla
warfare in Viet Nam. He said he
was sure that most of the inhabi
tants of the west bank area
wanted peace and quiet and had
nothing to do with the marau
ders.
Of the year that is now com
ing to a close it is impossible to
speak in the terms of summary
and appraisal we apply to ordi
nary aad even extraordinary
years. Three fateful six days U in
cluded—their marvels of heroism,
the dangers before them, the ob
ligations after them, their reflec
tion fib the outer world —) have
made of 5727 a year unique in
the annals of oar people.
The wonders in the land Were
echoed in the dispersion, in the
awakening among Jews every
where. In a matter of days
dissension ceased, opposition grew
silent, and indifference was no
longer to be found. Jews rose
as one man to the support of the
besieged heart of the peaple.
Prayer, generous aid, volunteer
ing for service in Israel—ell were
expressions of that newly
awakened sense of responsibility
which must continue to charac
terise finis Uvea.
it is the imperative of the time
that from every country where
this is possible, immigration flow

groupings within the Jewish
community be themselves among

those they lead; that the teachers

In time of war, he added, it
might be necessary to enter one

the struggle which is aimed at

lars to establish such a chair at
Emory.
The young couple in whose
memory the gift was made died
in a tragic hotel fire in Jackson
ville, Fla., Dec. 29, 1963.
Jay Cohen was a native of At
lanta. He received a Bachelor of
Laws degree from Emory Law
School and a B.A. degree from
the University of North Carolina.
He was married in 1962 to Leslie
Meryl Tomow of Jersey Qity,
N. J., who, prior to her marriage
taught in the public school sys
tem of DeKalb County, Ga. Mrs.
Cohen was graduated from Jer
sey City State College.
Mr. and Mrs. I. T. Cohen feel
close to . Emory not only due to
the fact that their son. Jay, was
a graduate but also because their
son-in-law Dr. William E. Schat-
ten, received his B.S. and M.D.
degrees from Emory and is an
instructor of surgery aiid on the
staff of Emory.
Mr. and Mrs. Cohen feel their
gift will enrich the entire com
munity and bring new insights
into a heritage which Jews and
Christians share.
Mr. and Mrs. Cohen are both
active in the cultural, religious,
and civic activities of Atlanta.
In expressing Emory’s appreci
ation to the Cohens tor the gen
erous gift, President Sahford S.
Atwood said it would help make
possible the addition of a noted
Jewish scholar to the faculty of
Emory’s department of religion,
-making available a rich religious
and cultural heritage.

their countries revoke that cruel

Vital as it is to bend all our
energies to effective encourage-

it is no less important that within
Israel we find effective methods
of absorbing aliyah.
