(which could have been settled
long ago if it did not serve as
such a useful political wea
pon)—we could not have pro
duced even the semblance of
Arab unity in these times.
Israel was supposed to be a re
source of incalculable value.
Unfortunately, it turned out to
be an instrument that we could
not use to our advantage, as we
had hoped.
“Consider, gentlemen, the
complexity of the Arab world,
with its bewildering social and
economic conflicts. Without
the issue of Israel to ignite a
spirit of conquest, we could
never form a coherent power
in the Middle East on any sin
gle issue. My esteemed Saudi-
Arabian colleague represents
an anachronistic absolute mon
archy where slavery actually
still exists—or did so until
very recently. My learned Sy
rian brother, on the other
hand, speaks for a peculiar
type of military socialism—
which is at odds with other
socialistic-minded nations and
factions. All in all, we repre
sent different interests, differ
ent social classes and aspira
tions and even—in spite of
talk of Moslem unity—even, in
a sense, different religions.
Even within the Mohammedan
faith, as you well know, there
are corrosive discords.
“Israel, if it had lived up to
our expectations, would have
been a wonderful rallying is
sue. serving to unite us so that
we Egyptians could eventually
have achieved complete hege
mony in a Middle Eastern pan-
Arabian empire.”
The Syrian delegate, who
followed with a melancholy
confession of his own, asserted
that there was still hope that
the Israeli issue might yet
unite the Arab world, hence it
was important to keep harping
on Israel’s occupation of Arab
territory and the plight of the
Arab refugees.
At this point a neutral dele
gate arose to suggest, ironic
ally, that if this were the case.
“You Arabs ought to concen
trate on preserving Israel,
rather than trying to destroy
your great political asset.” This
evoked embarassed laughter
from the Afro-Asian bloc.
And so it went on and on
and on and on, until the effect
of the unseen truth substance
faded and the delegates grad
ually recaptured their obliga
tory hypocrisy. Political ob
servers breathed easier, for
they knew if the scientist’s
emanation had resulted in a
permanent impairment of dip
lomatic behavior, peace and
justice might have been sud
denly loosed upon a world by
no means ready to accept it.
This would have been terri
ble, would it not?
