Bar Soviet Films
For Anti-Semitism
MELBOURNE (JTA) — The
Academy Theaters firm, which
operates two motion .picture
houses here, has announced a twin
on all Soviet films bejteuse of
“anti-Semitism in the Soviet
Union and its East European sa
tellite allies." The company also
announced cancellation of ar
rangements for a Soviet film fes
tival to coincide with the 50th
anniversary of the Russian Rev
olution because it would have
served as “a cover and smokes-
screen for the unspeakable in
justice and defamation being
perpetrated against Jews through
out the world by the Soviets and
their auxiliaries.”
Avoid Complacency
Writer Tells Centers
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
charge that “complacency” has
“weakened” the Jewish orienta
tion of Jewish community cen
ters in the United States, made
by Dr. Carl Urboni, executive
director of ihe 92nd St. YM
and YWHA, is the theme of the
leading article in the 68th an
nual edition of the American
Jewish Year Book published re
cently.
Dr. Urboni wrote that, after
the tragedy of the Nazi era, the
American Jewish public had
“felt a deep sense of responsibil
ity for the perpetuation of Jew
ish life. In recent years, how
ever, a complacency has weak
ened the Jewish orientation of
the Jewish community centers.”
He urged the centers to “attack
boldly the problem of Jewish
group survival in a free society,”
and declared that “they must de
cide whether to continue their
generalized approach or adopt a
more definitive Jewish program.”

That resistance, in turn, has

the counter-hatred resulting in

But does t he value of your
house really go down when Ne
groes move in?
Out in Colorado, real estate
forces were convinced of it.
So when a law was proposed
removing all barriers to housing,
the real estate people led the
struggle against it.
They warned Coloradans that
there would be sad consequences
if the law, enabling Negroes to
penetrate any area, passed.
But the law was passed. And
what happened?
What happened was that none
of the things feared by the whites
resulted. Negroes have been
moving into more and more sec
tions—and the worth of houses
has not fallen at all.
How do we know? We know
because the man who led the
attack cm the open housing law
said so in Nashville last July 7.
John I. Hasselblad, former
president of the Denver Board
of Realtors, confessed that he had
been wrong. In an amazing state
ment, he told people that, two
years after the passage of the
law, “the real estate industry has
not been hurt.”
He added, according to the NY
Times of July 8, “We find that
there bar not been a decrease In
property values by an influx of
the minority people.”
How’s that for a testimonial
that good conduct has good res
ults?
