The Festival had dramatic as
pects which were not part of the
original plan. For one-thing, for
eign policy of the Indiin govern
ment intruded. Israelis had look
ed forward to seeing the Kathak-
ali troupe, the Dance Theatre of
India. At the last moment the
group manager cabled Israel that
the government of India would
not permit them to appear. This
was perhaps Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s
way of punishing Israel for its ef
frontery in refusing to be anni
hilated by the Arab states. The
fact that the cancellation gave a
black eye to Indian culture waa
lost upon her.
If the Romans, who made Cae
sarea their capital in Palestine for
almost 500 years, look down upon
events of recent years in their
ancient Roman theatre, they have
perhaps become accustomed to
some of the programs of the an
nual Israel Festival. Performances
by Pablo Casals or Isaac Stem or
Israel’s orchestras; the sound of
music by Bartok or Beethoven,
Schubert or Mozart, has perhaps
become familiar already to King
Herod and hi3 successors.
But this past summer they got
a new shock. What could the
Romans make of a musical pro
gram which set an entire audi
ence to humming and singing and
swaying? If they listened care
fully from their heavenly abodes
the Caesars could catch such
strange words as "Auf’n Pripit-
chek” or ‘‘Rozhinkes mit Mand-
len.”
To them the whole program
would remain a mystery. How
could they realize that an evening
of Yiddish folklore, presented
under official auspices, represent

pie? There had been a time in
Israel when Yiddish had been not
merely discouraged, but actually
repressed. Today, the Hebrew
language is firmly established,
and all fear that Yiddish might
be a competitor has disappeared.
A Yiddish daily newspaper
thrives in Israel. Six Yiddish
language theatrical companies
play to full houses. ‘‘Fiddler on
the Roof,” in Yiddish, drew big
audiences.
The combination becomes even
stranger if we add to this mixture
of Beethoven, Yiddish folklore
and an American dance theatre
(without tbe Indians) a dash of
Shakespeare as well.
Israel’s summer tourists by the
thousands, weared or exhilarated
as the case may be from their
expanded program of sightseeing
to new areas in an enlarged Is
rael, now have a new and ex
citing way of spending their eve
nings as well. Imaginative plan
ning is already under way for a
1968 program to match the suc
cesses of past years.
In passing it should be record
ed that there were three other
cancellations from this year’s
schedule. The Yugoslav and Bul
garian choral groups failed to
show up for the international
Choir Festival, for fairly obvious
political reasons.
Eyebrows were lifted when the
Bnai Akiba Youth Choir of Los
Angeles also cancelled out. But
then it became known that the
50 members of the choir, who
had saved up about $1,000 each
for the trip, decided to contribute
the whole amount to the Israel
