Welcome, Israelis
Captured Soviet-Made Guns
Maimed Egyptian Oil Supply
We hope no copy of this issue reaches any of the Arab
countries for they will surely learn that several significant
Israeli luminaries will be in Atlanta beginning this weekend.
In fact so illustrious is the slate, we wonder who is mind
ing the store or whether the situation is as rough as it seems.
But even if we do say so ourself, Atlanta is a kind of magic
word for Israel in trouble, if we can boast a bit, illogically it
is true, of the mazel this editor brought to the Jewish State
during a recent dire hour of travail.
Tne leaders expected here may well renew their well-
springs of strength and mazel from their presence in Atlanta
and return bolstered for what fate holds in store, with a store
of whatever treasure it is they will bear back to Israel.
We were in Mayor Kollek’s municipality the day the Six-
Day War broke out and we must say he runs a taut city, with
citizens well-disciplined and united under the circumstances
of bombardment and staunch and courageous at a time of
grave danger and physical peril.
We dodged bullets in the street and shared bomb shelters
in Jerusalem with the citizens he governs, including 1500
school children, and the Jewish spirit of dauntlessness and
determination find unity we sensed was magnificent. It surely
trickled down from the provident administration which had
seen that proper precautions were taken to protect lives and
g roperty as much as possible. It surely reflected confidence in
lollek’s administration.
We had ourself, along with fellow U.S. Jewish editors,
been the special guest of Kollek at the wonderful Jewish
Museum where he was the principal speaker. He is indeed
something special. The persons privileged to hear him on Sun
day will be greatly rewarded.
I . So we bid a personal welcome to the mayor whom we
shall not be seeing since well be somewhere up east, and to
General Elazar who will be in Atlanta in behalf of Israel
Bonds later next week, as well as to noted author Zvi Kolitz
who will address the victory rally of the Atlanta Jewish Com
munity.
For that matter though we would be hutzpedic to presume
on Mayor Allen’s bailiwick, we think we’ll declare next week
“Israeli Week” and in this way indicate how important are
the forthcoming visitors.
The Jewish community is proud to play host to them and
we to acknowledge their presence.
Politics And Laughter
One of the great virtues of American democracy is the
g uarantee of a free press. The freedom of the press is assured
y provisions of the U.S. Constitution and by decisions of
the U.S. Supreme Court. The press may criticize' legislative
action, the action of the executive branch of our federal,
state and local governments, and with certain limitations,
the action of our judges and their court decisions.
It is not generally known that newspaper men and women
may and do lampoon the government officials, elected or ap
pointed, and exercise the freedom, without malice or favor,
to ridicule and laugh at the slogans, ideologies andpractices
of our politicians and government functionaries. They razz
their actions with impunity. They immolate their pretensions
by pouring the salt of humor and laughter on them and there
by question and challenge their attempts to claim exemption
from the barbs of their critics. All this is done good-naturedly
and with the consent and, often the participation, of the very
officials laughed at.
These programs give the press people and the officials and
bureaucrats the opportunity to lighten their burdens, to lessen
the tensions of governing and being governed, and above all,
to point to all concerned that they are not gods but human
beings, like all of us, who appear on the scene and soon enough
vanish.
This is part of the precious freedom not only of dissent,
but the freedom to laugh at the comic aspects of slogans and
the so-called ideologies of liberty, free enterprise, property
rights and love. Newspaper people can do this best because
they report, see and expose the follies of our politicians and
often their attempts to cover up wrong-doing.
The best examples of the exercise of this freedom are the
annual Gridiron arranged by the National Press Club in Wash
ington, D.C., and the Cracker Crumble of the Georgia Press
Association, arranged in Atlanta, Georgia.
Life is too serious, too complicated, to be concerned always
with the so-called crucial issues without the benefit of the
lighter vein of seeing human folly. Let us ever remember the
therapeutic values of laughter and the comic.
We salute the efforts of our colleagues of the press to
maintain a sense of proportion and good humor in challenging,
questioning, and avoiding the cult of worshipping sacred cows.
Without belittling the Importance of facing the issues of the
day and the problems of social change ana action, let us not
restrict or fence in our freedom to laugh.
TEL AVIV (JTA) — In the
fierce October 24 battle across the
Suez Canal and in the area of
the city of Suez, lasting three
and a half hours, Israel knocked
out 80 percent of Egypt’s oil
refining capacity. After the Egyp
tians started the fighting, the Is
raeli Aiimy spokesman said here,
Israel laid down a massive artil
lery barrage, using some of the
largest-caliber Soviet guns cap
tured from Egypt during the Six-
Day War.
The spokesman said the Egyp
tians opened fire in the Port Tew-
fik area and at the southern end
of the Suez Canal. It was the
first Egyptian action since Egyp
tian missiles sank the Israeli des
troyer Elath on October 21.
Aocordng to the Army spokes
man, the skies of the western
shore of the Suez Canal were
blackened by smoke, as Egypt’s
most important oil refineries
were set ablaze by Israeli shells.
Outside Suez, the El Nasser re
finery was destroyed, and the
Suez refinery was demolished. El
Nasser produced 3 million to 3.5
million tons of oil annually, the
other facility had an annual ca
pacity of 2 million tons.
The blasting of Egypt’s oil re
fineries was the most staggering
blow suffered by that country’s
economy since the capture of the
Sinai oil fields by Israeli forces
last June.
Defense Minister Moshe -Dayan
said at a Ted Aviv meeting that
the sinking of the Elath was
"casus belli” and indicated that
Nasser was anxious to reopen
hostilities with Israel. Gen. Dayan
said it was clear that Nasser gave
orders for the action. The Elath
sinking, he said, was tantamount
to a declaration of war by Egypt.
