TH* SOUTHBtN ISKAEUTi Friday, Nov. 10, 1967 Tw Carl Alpert The Mysterious Russians HAIFA—One of the atill solved mysteries which panted the Six Day War deala on the Syrian] front. Officially! the Israel Gov eminent is silent on the Asked about the Rus sians only last month, General Yitzhak I tab replied: “No Rus-| sians participat ed actively in Alpert the fighting against us, and at any rate no Soviet prisoners were captured.” That would appear to be the last word, but speculation here continues. Israel is a small coun try, and the widely held belief that Russians were involved on the Golan Heights is based on more than rumor. Israelis who were at that front make no secret of the fact that short wave radio receivers on our side of the lines did pick up con versations in the Russian lang uage between points on the Syr ian communications system. To be sure, that alone is not suffic iently strong evidence. In like manner the Syrians could “prove” that there had been Anglo- American collaboration on the Little Budget Rent-A-Car System SAVES YOU UP TO 40% > New Chevrolet Impalas— $7 a day and 6<t a mile, i 1967 Chevrolet Chevelles— $G day and 6<t a mile, i Buy only the gas you use. 525-4641 Dinkier Plaza Riviera American Atlanta Cabana (H( ' In the Center of DowntowuAtlantal • 150 Air-Conditioned Rooms] • Dining Facilities for 1200 • 800 Seat Convention Hall • 14 Separate Meeting Rooms • Complete Audio-Visual Facilities • Pool and Sun Deck • Free In-Hotel Parking • 2Restaurants* 2 Lounges j K B \nmctui 1 MOTOR HOTEL , SHUNS ST. fc CMNUIE WAY MHA-M00 TWX 404427-22)4 un _ Israel aide of the lines by citing the constant exchange of com ments and information in English on a wialky-talky system con necting the two sides of Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi. The explanation, of course, is that this kibbutz is settled for the, most part by mem bers from Great Britain, who still find it easier to converse with each other in English than in Hebrew. Yet when the Golan Heights were overrun, a search of the Syrian bunkers is supposed to have uncovered a supply of Rus sian books which someone had been reading to help pass the time. Perhaps some Syrian sol diers did know a little Russian —‘but enough to enable them to read Tolstoy in the original? It is common knowledge in Is rael that one of the Russians taken into custody was a woman. She had been wounded, and the story was widely told that when an Israeli doctor sought to treat her she responded with curses. Several of the Russians are re ported to have been treated at the Rambam Government hospital here in Haifa. Then why the official denials? Perhaps General Rabin’s careful words should be analyzed. He said that no Russians “participat ed actively” in the fighting against us. This is doubtless true. Any Russians on the Syrian front wore there as consultants, as ad visers or as technical experts, ra ther than as combatants. This sheds light on the second half of Rabin's statement to the effect that no Soviet prisoners were captured. If the Russians were not enemy combatants, then they Higher Education Makes Big Strides At 3 Universities JERUSALEM (JTA) — The swift growth of higher education in Israel was dramatized last week as three major universities moved ahead with expansion projects with the blessings of the Prime Minister and members of his cabinet. Tel Aviv University laid the cornerstone of its ten-story med ical school budding and will lay another cornerstone for its new Peretz Naftali social and science faculty building. Haifa University, Israel’s youngest, dedicated its first building ‘and Bar Ilan Uni versity will dedicate its Gustav Wurzweiler Library. Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and Minister of Education Zalman Aranne attended the Haifa dedi cation. At Tel Aviv, Health Min ister Israel Barzilai said “it is un fortunate that we meet to re joice in such a ceremony while the victims of the destroyer Elath have been laid to their eternal rest.” Need Immigration For *Greater Israel’ JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prime Minister Levi Eshkol warned an audience of B’nai B’rith leaders here that poor prospects of fur ther immigration of Jews to Is rael, particularly from Western countries, could seriously hamper Israel in any future negotiations with the Arabs over boundaries and an eventual peace settle ment. Addressing the opening session of the B’nai B’rith Israel Com mission, the Prime Minister re ferred to a “greater Israel’' in cluding the occupied parts of Jor dan, Syria and Egypt, and to the “new opportunities” that faced his nation in the aftermath of its victory in the Six-Day War last June. He noted that “greater” Is rael’s population today numbers 3.8 million, of which 64 percent are Jews and 36 percent non- Jews. “If you were to ask me what is required to realize these opportunities, I would answer in one simple phrase: ‘We need Jews’,” he said. were taken into custody (not cap tured) just as we would “rescue” any other foreign citizens who happened to be in the battle zone. Following medioal treat ment where necessary, the rescued Russians were handed over to the Soviet Embassy, which at once took care of their repatriation. It will be recalled that a special Russian ship put in at Haifa to evacuate Soviet Embassy person nel following the severance of diplomatic relations. It is also worth noting that Russia broke off diplomatic re lations with Israel not after the defeat of Egypt, not after- the capture of Jerusalem, but only when Israel’s troops undertook to silence Syrian guns. Why Israel refuses to confirm known facts is difficult to ex plain. The Russians know that we know. There can certainly be no desire to spare them embarrass ment or humiliation, in view of the Russian attacks against Is rael at the UN. By keeping mum we keep the Russians guessing. Or is Israel simply trying to play down Russian involvement, so that it will be easier for the Soviets to disengage from this area later, should they so desire? At any rate, if Israel continues to maintain official silence il must have good reasons. Perhaps some day the truth will be told. Anti-Semitic Slurs All Seen Brewed In Same Arab Pot HOUSTON, Tex. (JTA) —Ben jamin R. Epstein, national director of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, said that virulent anti-Israel and anti-Jewish prop aganda put out by the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestine Arab Delegation is dis seminated in the USA by two racist organizations, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Commit tee (SNCC) and the white su premacist National States Rights Party. Speaking before the ADL’s na tional executive committee, Mr. Epstein displayed copies of the SNCC’s newsletter and the states right party organ, “Thunderbolt,” which showed the same “word- for-word” dependence on Arab propaganda material against Jews, Zionism and Israel, although the white and Negro groups are “polar opposites.’’ Mr. Epstein said that the SNCC newsletter “parroted whole sections of a 1966 Palestine Lib eration Organization Diatribe produced in Lebanon” while the “Thunderbolt” reproduced whole paragraphs from a Palestine Arab Delegation polemic issued last July 14. Both Arab oganizations are registered with the U. S. Gov ernment as agents for foreign powers under regulations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. City Block in N.Y.
