NEW YORK (JTA)—President
Johnson made a surprise visit
here last week to tell a dinner of
the biennial convention of the
Jewish Labor Committee that
“the same kind of issues are at
stake" in the Viet Nam war as
m the. Middle East conflict
The President made his unex
pected visit at the dinner of the
National Trade Union Council for
Human Rights of the JLC, in hon
or of George Meany, president of
the AFL-CIO, who was given the
first annual Labor Human Rights
Award of the Council, under the
chairmanship of Charles S. Zim
merman, vice president of the In
ternational Ladies Garment
Workers Union.
The White House kept the
president’s trip here a secret until
early in the evening to prevent
any hostile demonstrations. In a
strong defense of his Viet Nam
policy, the President said that an
American failure in Southeast
Asia would “risk far more terri
ble war in the future." He added
“the same kind of issues are at
stake in the Middle East. There
we see the agony of men strug
gling toward peace amid the
danger of war.”

uance of efforts to attain a Mid
dle Bast peace that would enable
the peoples of the region to “live
together In dignity and mutual
respect. We know that failure in
the Middle East can condemn the
children of that region to endless
