Marshall Cohen, born in At
lanta in 1933, is the son of Harry
Cohen and Sophia Maziar Cohen
Hoffman. At age 8, he was
stricken with polio from the hips
down, leaving both legs para
lyzed, though the left one was
not as severely affected as the
right. Two months later he
went to Warm Springs for treat
ment. After spending a few
months in a neck-to-feet cast,
the youngster began a rehabili
tation program. He was taught
how to walk with a splint on his
left leg, a brace weighing 10
pounds on his right leg, and
Canadian crutches.
In February of 1942, Marshall
came home and re-entered public
school, walking with great diffi
culty. During the next 13 years
he underwent 12 major opera
tions in Atlanta gnd Warm
Springs on his hips and legs. A
few weeks before his Bar Mitzva,
his brace broke, causing him to
fall and break his leg. The
courageous youth celebrated his
Bar Mitzva sitting in a wheel
chair with his leg in a cast.
After graduation from Mur
phy High School, he received
his BS degree from Emory Uni
versity in 1954. He was a mem
ber of AEPi fraternity and is a
past master.
With the same determination
that had characterized his early
years, Cohen graduated from the
Medical College of Georgia in
1958, interned for a year at
Georgia Baptist Hospital and
served a two year residency in
Dermatology at the Virginia
Medical College in Richmond.
After a year at Pennsylvania
University Department of Der
matology, Cohen entered private
practice in Atlanta in 1962. He
is a member of PhiDE medical
fraternity.
Mrs. Cohen is the former
Helene Zimmerman of Jackson
ville and they have a son, 7,
and a daughter, 4. Dr. Cohen
is a member of Ahavath Achim
Synagogue, where he serves on
the Education Committee, and
also serves on the Gate City
Lodge Board of Trustees.
Mr. Page, who will address the
assembly, and give an insight
as to how tax dollars are being
used for human development,
is, at 40, the youngest HEW
regional director. He has held
this post for the six Southern
states since 1965.
Reservations for the Gate City
