Jordan’s King Hussein spent
three days in Washington recent
ly, where he was received by
President Lyndon B. Johnson at
the White House: lunched with
Secretary Dean Rusk at the State
Department; and told his side
of the Middle East conflict to the
House Foreign Affairs and Sen
ate Relations Committees on Cap
itol Hill.
He also gave two major
speeches — at the National Press
Club and at Georgetown Uni
versity. He said he brought with
him—from the Arab countries—
an “extremely reasonable” solu
tion to the Mideast dispute.
Yet, few seemed to understand
just what that solution entailed.

his lengthy statements and in his
replies to pointed questions. His
reception here was cordial.
He indicated that the Arab
countries are willing to compro
mise and that it is Israel who is
holding up any possible settle
ment
“We won’t declare what we will
do until we know what the other
side will do,” he said.
Hussein also said that he and
President Nasser of Egypt do con
cur on their positions—but Syria
and Algeria feel differently.
“Yes, Nasser and I are in ex
tremely close touch—very close
in our positions,” he said. “There
is no difference between us in
our positions.
The Jordan monarch, who will
be 32 years old this week, spoke
at a National Press Qlub lunch
eon. At the table opposite him
were many prominent Jewish
leaders, including novelist Her
man Wouk, Dr. Alec C. Levin
and David Lloyd Kreeger. (That
same evening, Mr. Rreeger, vice
chairman of the board of Geico,
was honored at the Jewish Na
tional Fund's Salute to Israel,
where the Mayor of Jerusalem,
Theodore Kollek, was the guest
speaker.)
King Hussein told his audience
that he was speaking “in the
name of the whole Arab nation
when he offererd the “new and
positive approach of the Arabs
toward peace” and called on Is
rael to “offer some terms for us
to consider.”
He denied that Jordan is pre
pared to negotiate its own settle
ment with Israel on a bilateral
basis, despite such a report by
Israel’s Prime Minister, Levi Esh-
kol.
Pressed for answer as to
whether it is possible for Jordan
to negotiate with Israel on her
own, and independently of Egypt
or other Arab countries, he add
ed “Anything is possible, but our
feeling is strong and definite that
no useful purpose could be
achieved through dealing with
this problem piecemeal. The
problem was born fa the United
Nations, and that’s where we
hope the foundations will be laid
for a just and lasting peaoe.”
He asked that strong and just
measures now be taken to pre
vent another war. "Unless some
thing is done now,” he warned,
“the struggle between the Israelis
and ourselves will go on until
either the Arab world is subju
gated by a Zionist empire, or
the State of Israel.”

Asked if he would, again, put

Before leaving the nation’s cap

Their conversation was not dis

said that King Hussein came here
to discuss the basic elements of

how to achieve peaoe in the Mid
