Pact on Shipping
By DR. SAMUEL SILVER
(A Seven Arts Feature)
There’s an awful lot of wit
around.
A quip does much to lift the
gloom.
I don’t ’ know about you but I
relish humor.
That’s why I’m
rushing into print
to share that
sally I heard re
cently by
comedian who
said that if Nel
son Rockefeller
is seriout about
not wanting to
be president, let him prove it—
by hiring Romney’3 speechiwriiter.
And I remember what Nelson
Rockefeller himself said over a
year ago at a reception for Pres.
Zalman Sbazar: “You and I have
something in common: each of us
must please 2 and a half million
Jewish voters.”
The continuing harassment of
the Arabs makes one less amen
able to the facetious comments
which the Six-Day War unleash
ed. But one can still appreciate
the assertion by someone or other
that the Israeli secret weapon
was: Dayanamite.
The eloquent Norman Thomas
came through beautifully recently
when he said that he opposed the
war in Vietnam but he also op
posed tflag-tfu rning. Those who
feel our country should be more
peaceful should not do so nasty
a thing as to bum our banner.
Let them wash the flag, instead,
he said, with incisive wittiness.
President Johnson has grim
work to do but he softens it oc
casionally with a bat af kidding.
Remember, some time ago when
he urged-government people to
put out their lights at night to
save money? Shortly afterwards
he told a press conference that
his firt^ne son-in-law, then court
ing bis .daughter in occasional
White House dates, favored the
program.

Flying Saucers
On Soviet Agenda
NEW YORK (WUP)—The So
viets have decided to follow the
example of the U. S. Govern
ment and make a study of UFO’s.
An AP dispatch from Moscow
reports that the Kremlin has set
up a special commission to in
vestigate the many repors in Rus
sia of unidentified flying objects.
The commission, a unit of the So
viet Air Force, has established an
office in Moscow.
The USSR action was taken
as a result of a report last April
by scientist F. Zigel who disclosed
that Soviet radar screens had
been detecting “flying saucers’
for a period of 20 years.
Ponce de Leon at Highland
OPEN ALL NIGHT
The tote Pope John was prone
to jest, as did his namesake, the
late President Kennedy. As for
Bobby Kennedy, he can aim a
deft barb, too, as he did when
responding to reports that the
Russians said their cosmonauts
saw no sign of God. Snapped
Bobby: “Let them aim a little
higher.”
Another serious person who is
also a fun lover is Maurioe Sam
uel, the writer and lecturer. In
terviewed by Rabbi Morris Kert-
zer, who is profiling American
Jewry in the book, “Today’s
American Jew,” Samuel was sit
ting in h^s .study with papers lit
tered everywhere, even on the
floor. Samuel pointed towards the
floor and said, “Those are my
footnotes.”
LONDON (JTA) — A senior
Lebanese official has denied re
ports of an agreement between
Lebanese and Israeli authorities
on shipping facilities that would
have permitted cargo vessels to
call at both Israeli and Lebanese
ports on the same voyage, the
Financial Times reported from
Beirut.
According to the report, steam
ship lines in Beirut said that Leb
anon oontinues to adhere to the
Arab League boycott regulations
against Israel. The American Ex-
port - Ishnan dtsen Line told the
Times that it “has not contem
plated and does not contemplate
the employment in Lebanese ports
of its vessels calling at Israel
“and is ignorant of these ru
mors.”
