One story which surely des
erves to be remembered in the
annals of this historic period is
that of the American Jewish com
munity and its amazing response
to Israel’s financial needs. The
figures are awesome. It is cer
tainly no myth that the well or
ganized fund raising apparatus of
the United Jewish Appeal and the
highly proficient Israel Bond Or
ganization had difficulty keeping
up with the enthusiasm, gener

supporters.
There is an element in this how
ever, whch may not be fully
understood, for it certainly re
ceived no publicity. I am refer
ring to the self-discipline pf the
majority of Israel oriented organ

have been written about over
lapping of fund raising cam

over-organization of the com
munity, and many have despaired
of the wastefulness of this sorry
competition. Still, no legislature
was required to establish the
primacy of the Israel Emergency
Fund and no polioe force was
needed to apply pressure on or
ganizations of merit the urgency
of whose needs did not match
those of Israel itself.
Overnight, planned events were
cancelled and campaigns cut
short. The leadership and mem

According to the report, The

supported a preferential arrange

France and Italy advocated that

assure an expansion of trade.
Belgium and Luxemburg have not
yet announced their positions.

called a halt to their respective

at the call of the UJA and Israel

like their Israeli counterparts,
closed ranks in the face of the
threat to Israel’s existence.
The American Friends of the
Hebrew University and their op

overwhelming deficits which they
all have in common, declared a
