HAIFA— Everyone knows the
joke abourt the President qf Is
rael—who has to put up with the
advice end opin

lion vice presi
dents. It is
longer a joke,
seems as if eve
citizen ol
state has
views as to thel
policy to bei
adopted toward!
the newly occu
pied territories.
And they do
not hesitate to
make their voices heard. Letters
to the editor, as well as paid ad
vertisements set forth, sometimes
in great detail, exactly what in
dividuals or groups think should
be done.
“Let us leave the conquered
areas immediately” is the bold
headline on a large display ad
vertisement in the Hebrew press.
The text is brief and pointed:
“Our right to protect ourselves
against annihilation does not give
us the right to oppress others.
Conquest results in foreign rule.
Foreign rule breeds opposition.
Opposition requires repression.
And repression means terror and
counter-terror. The victims of
terror are generally innocent peo
ple. Retention of the conquered
areas will turn us into a nation
of murderers and murdered.’
This point of view, it should be
noted, is extremely unpopular in
Israel today. The proclamation
carried twelve signatures, only
one of whom is well known—a
newspaper cartoonist and satir
ist.
On the same day that the above
appeared, other pages of the
press carried a large advertise
ment, of identical size, headed:
“For a Whole Land of Israel.”
The Government has no right to
give back land which now com
pletes the traditional borders of
Israel. Security of the nation de
mands keeping these lands in our
possession, say the signatories,
who include many major person
alities from the fields of litera
ture, education, industry and pol
itics. Familiar names include Mrs.
Rachel Ben Zvi, Dan Tolkowsky,
Zeev Vilnai, S. J. Agnon, Nathan
Alterman, General A v r aham
Yaffe.
An in-between solution is pro
posed by still another committee
of artists, publicists and profes
sors. They call far the establish
ment of a new Arab state to be
constituted from the Gaza Strip
and the West Bank. A Federa
tion of Palestine shall be set up,
to include the State of Israel,
the new Arab State, and hope-
