Grove in Israel
To Honor Spellman
NEW YORK (JTA)— Plans to
plant a grove of trees in Israel
in memory of Francis Cardinal
Spellman, Late Archbishop of
New York, were announced by
the Council of Jewish Organiza
tions in Civil Service, which rep
resents 80,000 members in 42 or
ganizations of Jewish civil service
Dr. Herman Man tell, council
president said that while the late
Cardinal was “a prince of the
Catholic Church, the Jewish com
munity of New York held him in
equally high esteem.” He added
that “we join our Catholic bre
thren in mourning this great loss.

New Study Center
CLEVELAND (JTA)— A new
center for Torah studies and
teacher education will be estab
lished in Israel by the Telshe
Yeshiva of Cleveland as the core
of a new religious community
that will provide synagogues, ele
mentary schools, shopping cen
ters and homes for 250 families
and an anticipated initial student
body of 400. It will be named
Kiryait Tedshe-Stane in honor of
Irving I. Stone, American indus
trialist who donated the lend.
Boycott Holy Sites
LONDON (JTA)—Christian re
ligious leaders in Jordan are
urging their followers to boycott
holy places under Israeli occupa
tion this Christmas, it was re
ported here in dispatches from
Amman. Israel had announced
that Jordanian Christians would
be permitted entry to the West
Bank to celebrate Christmas at
Bethlehem.

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
American college campus is “a
disaster area for Jewish values
and loyalty,” and the Jewish
community has so far failed to
grapple with the “tremendous
problem” posed by that situation
for the survival of American Ju
daism, a Now York rabbi assert
ed here.
Rabbi Irving Greenberg issued
the warning. He said also that
the challenge of college to all re
ligion is particularly dangerous
to Judaism because of the large
and growing percentage of Jew
ish college students.
He noted that the American.
Jewish community was nearing
the point of sending almost all
of its young people to college.
Citing as one of the major prob
lems that of interfaith dating
prevalent on the oollege campus,
Rabbi Greenberg said that third-
generation, college - educated
Amerioan Jews have nearly
tripled or quadrupled the inter
marriage rate of the Jewish pop
ulation in general.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Seven
major national Jewish organiza
tions called last week on Presi
dent Johnson to countermand
Gen. Lewis B. Hersheyls recent
recommendation to local draft
boards that they reclassify and
induct draft registrants who en
gage in what the general called 1
“illegal activity” to oppose the
draft.
In a statement, the organiza
tions strongly defended “the right
to express dissent from the de
cisions of government.” Asserting
that they “neither condone nor
defend illegal actions,” they said
that ‘“service in the armed forces
of our country must never be
viewed as a substitute for penal
service, nor should any admini
strative official be permitted to
impose punishment without ju
dicial process.”
Joining in the statement were
the American Jewish Committee,
Amerioan Jewish Congress, Jew
ish Labor Committee, National
Council of Jewish Women, Union
of American Hebrew Congrega
tions, United Synagogue of Amer
ica, Union of Orthdox Jewish

Arab Sentenced
Because of Brother
TEL AVIV (JTA)—A military
court has imposed a four-year
prison sentence on a West Bank
Arab who was found guilty of
harboring an El Fatah terrorist,
who was his brother, and <vf
having fire arms on his prem
ises. The brother had taken part
in attacks on Israeli security
forces and was killed in one of
the encounters. The court refused
to accept the defendant’s claim
that he was unaware of has bro
ther’s terrorist activities because
of the fire arms found.

Speaks to AFL-CIO
BAL HARBOUR, Fla. (JTA)—
Aiharon Becker, secretary-gener
al of Histadrut, the Israel Feder
ation of Labor, said in a speech
to the convention of the AFL-
CIO here that neither Israel nor
the Arab states could afford to
return to the conditions “which
kept the area in terror and tur
moil for 20 years and made it a
danger to the nations that live
there and to the peace of the
world as a whole.
Becker told the leadership of
the Amerioan labor movement
that the only answer to the Mid
dle East problem was for Israelis
and Arabs to negotiate directly,
seeking a peace based on mutual
respect and recognition.
