Shrugs Off
Soviet Threat
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
State Department has sought to
minimize the dangers created by
the Soviet military build-up in
the Middle East and Mediterran
ean areas. State Department press
spokesman Robert J. MoCloskey
said the Russian actions did not
“pose any immediate military
threat’’ to the United States and
her allies. But Russian activities
“do bear careful watching,” he
added.
Mr. McCloskey’s remarks per
tained to the massive Soviet re
supply of weapons to the Arabs
and to reports of greater Soviet
naval and air activity in the re
gion. He declined to estimate the
number of Soviet military ad
visors in Egypt. Other State De
partment officials saw no cause
for alarm over Russian activities
in support of the Arabs. They
said the public should not as
sume that ail the Russians in
Egypt were military men because
many were engineers and tech
nicians aiding with irrigation and
agrarian reform projects.
Russia now has over 50 war
ships in the Mediterranean, in
cluding her latest guided-missile
cruisers. Additionally, there are
estimated to be between 10 and
20 submarines and numerous sup
port ships of various types. Op
position Congressmen have re
cently accused the Administration
of responding only to the Com
munist threat to Viet Nam while
ignoring a dangerous Russian
movement into the Middle East
and Mediterranean.
Expect 20,000 Settlers
—If Conditions Right
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Leon Dult-
zin, member of the Jewish Agen
cy Executive, predicted here that
Israel could expect 20,000 settlers
from countries of the free world
in 19§8 provided that adequate
