BEHIND UN SCENES By David Horowitz
Hanuka Reflections
UNITED NATIONS (WUP) —
Th<e 22nd session of the General
Assembly—much -taken up with
Israel’s rights in her ancient his
toric homeland — has adjourned
amid numerous unresolved crises
still troubling this war-weary
planet as the year 1967 closes
in a “season of peace” and as the
Hanuka festival, moving from
December into the year 1967, will
witness our people throughout the
globe kindle in double-joy the
flaming lights of victory.
As world Jewry thus oommem-
oraltes Hanuka of Maccabean
fame and of miraculous acoom-
paniment, every Jewish heart will
throb with restrained joy and re
flect with deep emotion on the
miracle of Israel that shook the
world in June. But the children
of Israel must also realize dur
ing this victory commemoration
that the “battle” is not over. It
is only “the oowtinua/tion-begin-
ning’’ of a culminating greater
struggle between the “children
of light” , and those of “darkness”
—a conflict which had its origin
in antiquity, in Bible days. It is
Esau versus Jacob in a modem
setting; Babylon against Israel;
“Pharaoh" pitted against “Moses.”
This time, however, the struggle
is global, not regional.
What we are witnessing today,
here at the UN and around the
world, is the crystallization into
ideological power blocs of two
basic forces: one utterly material
istic and atheistic, ruthless and
cold-blooded; the other, although
also materialistic, is spiritually
attuned to the Hebraic heritage
in the understanding of the Ju-
deo-Christian philosophy of life.
It is not difficulty today to de
termine who these pjeaples are.
We know those few elect nations
who have been upholding Israel’s
cause here at the UN. They are
peoples whose way of life and
heritage—the Decalogue Faith—
are shared with the Jewish na
tion. We also know who the oth
ers are. Their actions and
spieeches have betrayed them. The
modem “Babylonian-Chaldeans”
refuse to let their Jewish citi
zens go free, and they have en
tered into a league with the chil
dren of “Eeau-Ishmael” who still
seek to slay Jacob.
And this Liftrand-deaith strug
gle appears to persist without an
end in sight The enemy refuses
to accept the olive-branch held
out to them by Jacob. Said Am
bassador Oomay in Ms spteeoh
here last week: “Arab attempts
to wip>e the State of Israel off
the Middle East map have
launched three wars in nineteen
years. The bitter fruit of these
w>ars have been death, damage
and displacement for both sides."
He then asked: “Must this sense
less and destructive cycle repjeat
itself once more in the coming
years?”
It appears to this writer that
it will. Israel’s foes have not yet
learned their lesson from those
three wars. Nor does the Soviet
Union and her friends realize
what they are getting into and
with whom they are playing.
They are not playing with the
Jewish preople alone! They are
playing with the One—Who nei
ther slumbers nor sleeps—Whose
Hand was very much in evidence
last June. Israel’s victory was not
a normal occurrence. People may
say whatever they say about
“Gcd being dead” and many
among our own brethren may be
skeptical about the workings of
Providence. And some Israelis
may boast and declare that “'all
this was done with our own
might!"
Your correspondent maintains
that it is because of this general
doubt and skepticism and disbe
lief that the Rock of Israel—the
One Who guided Moses, Joshua,
Gideon, Deborah and all the oth
ers — continues to harden the
heart of our modem “Pharaoh,”
as we all see He is doing to Nas
ser who remains adamant and
prepares himself with mighty
Babylonian weapx>ns for another
military showdown.
Undoubtedly, Jerusalem is the
focal px>int which will lead to the
fulfillment of another chapter of
the Bible, Zechariah 14 — it is
worth reeding—which speaks of
“nations going to battle against
Jerusalem,” of an earthquake and
of a plague which will engulf and
overtake them. This chapter may
be better understood in the light
of what is recounted in chapiter
12.
It is written: “As In the days
of thy coming out of the land of
Egypt will I show him (Israel)
marvelous things.” This is a
promise from the Souroe of Life.
One thing is certain — and the
Hanuka season is a good time
to reflect on It: The Bible does
not lie, as we are all just now
beginning to find out.
Are we ready for the day of
decision and what it holds in
store for us and all mankind?
