Wants to Increase
Interfaith Dialogue
MONTREAL (JTA) — Can
ada’s first conference of Catho
lics and Jews was told that this
was the time to increase Jewish -
Christian dialogue, not to reduce
it because of disappointment
with the failure of the church to
react to the threat to Israel’s
existence last May and June
Addressing a Judeo-Christtan
institute at Loyola University
here, Joseph L. Lichten, director
of intercultural affairs of the
Anti-Defamation League of B’nai
B’rith, noted that “Christian-
Jewish encounters are the chan
nel of true understanding.” He
said they “oannot be jeopardized
because of one’s specific issue,
however grave.” The issue it
self — in this case, Israel and the
world Jewish response to it —
he said, must be included in the
dialogue.
AFL CIO Will Take
Histadrut Debentures
BAL HARBOUR, Fla. (JTA)—
George Meany, president of the
American Federation of Labor-
Congress of Industrial Organiza
tions, announced that the Ameri
can labor movement would fully
subscribe to $i0 million in
debentures of Histadrut, the
Israel Labor Federation. The
proceeds wil be used to expand
Histadrut’s cooperatives in Israel.
Mr.'-Meany’s announcement was
made at a special luncheon today
attended by top officials of the
14-million member American
labor organization. Aharon
Becker, secretary-general of
Histadrut, who is attending the
AFL-CIO convention, was pres
ent at the luncheon.
$20 Million Drive
For Bar-Ilan U.
NEW YORK (JTA)—Initial
contributians of $2.4 million in a
$20 million development cam
paign for Bar-Ilan University,
an American-cht rtered / institu
tion in Israel, v ere announced
here by the University's chan
cellor, Dr. Joseph H. Lookstein,
at a 13th anniversary dinner.
Major objectives of the cam
paign are the establishment of a
law school, a school of business
administration, an Institute for
Higher Jewish Studies, and the
construction of a science center,
according to Dr. Lookstein,
spiritual leader of New York’s
Congregation Kehilath Jeshu-
run. About a third of Bar-Ilan’s
3,800 students are studying
careers in science. The university
has been encouraging Arahs to
enroll, with 12 Arabs now in at
tendance. Eight extension cour
ses are now available providing
adult education and credit
courses.

For Hebrew Study
Graduate fellowships and stip
ends for students of Hebrew are
available for the fall of 1968 at
New York University’s Institute
