“Sixty years of continuous
community activity” will be cel
ebrated at the anniversary assem
bly of the Atlanta branches of
the Workmen’s Circle on Sunday,
Jan. 14, at the Progressive Club
at 6:30 p. m.
Its 60 years of active life qual
ifies the Workmen’s Circle as one
of Atlanta’s oldest Jewish organ
izations and it has played a prom
inent role in the cultural and ed
ucational enrichment of the com
munity.
Branch 207 was chartered in
1908 as the South’s first Work
men’s Circle chapter, with Joe
Libowsky as its first secretary.
M. J. Merlin of Atlanta, the only
living charter member, will pre
side at the 60th anniversary cere
monies.
The first women’s branch of
the WC was chartered in Atlan-

ish Youth Council to join with
the Council in a public appeal to
\the government of the Soviet
Union to end its denial of op
portunity for religious and cul
tural expression by the Jewish
people of the USSR.
On Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 7:30
p. m. on the front lawn of the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter at 1745 Peachtree St., N. E.,
a mass rally will take place—co
incident with the last evening of
Hanuka, the Festival of Lights.
On each of the seven nights
previous to January 2, repres
entatives of the youth organiza
tions affiliated with the Atlanta
Jewish Youth Council will con
duct a candle-lighting ceremony
in the tradition of the festival
and as a symbol of their protest
on’behalf of Soviet Jewry.

Sheldon Goldstein, 20, of Au
gusta lias been named to the
Dean’s List at Yeshiva Univer
sity's Yeshiva College for aca
demic achievement during the
1966-67 school year. He is the
scai of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Gold
stein and is a junior majoring in
physics.

For over twenty years the
USSR has refused to permit the
training of rabbis, the printing of
prayer books or the manufacture
of special foods used on the oc
casion of the various Jewish hol
idays. Harrassment by special
agents has made Jews fearful of
attending • the few remaining
synagogues so that the handful
of congregations whioh remain in
the major cities are attended only
by a few of the elderly of the
Soviet Jews. •»
