Brandeis U.
VS 1 announcement of the selection of Morris B. Abram
as thft next, president of Brandeis University brought surprise
as well as excitement to his many friends in Georgia and
.the South: We thought of him as the advocate in the courts
of law for what was right and just. We thought of him as
one who enjoyed the active life of the political arena. We
knew him as one who was never afraid to face controversy in
efforts to resolve public issues.
And . . . now comes the news that he was entering upon
a new career and accepting a post, which traditionally has
been regarded- as a sort of “ivory tower.” In the language of
<fae dictionary, this is “a place or situation remote from
Worldly or practical affairs.” We we are certain that this
will never apply to Morris Abram. We are doubly certain
that Ine* expres «ion, “living in an ivory tower, he had no un
derstanding of politics” Will never be said of him. If there
is one subject which Morris Abram knows and understands
thoroughly 1 ,'it is politics. He is an adept of the first order in
the science and arf of politics.
It should be noted that the traditional concept of the
office of a president of a university has undergone vast
changes in recent years. Indifference toward worldly affairs
and an aloofness from concern with the problems of present
day society no longer, characterize the life and activities of
a university president. We cannot conceive that Morris
Abram will, at any time in his new career, become an ad
vocate or practitioner of “ivory-tpoymism.”, HV
As the New York. limes aptly pointed out, Morris Abram
is a “Man of Many Talents.”
fie became a brilliant lawyer. After graduating with
honors' ‘from the University of Georgia, where he acquired
a reputation as an outstanding debater, he enrolled in the
.University of Chicago Law School. From there he went to
England as a Rhodes Scholar.
j During World War II, he served for four years in Air
Force Intelligence, where he attained the rank of major. After
the war, during the Nurenberg trials of Nazis accused of war
crimesrhe was a member of the American staff of prosecuting
attorneys.
Atlanta and the entire State of Georgia will long re
member his 14-year battle against the county unit system
of election. If not for this system, he would have been a
member of Congress from the 5th District in Georgia.
In 1962, he argued the case before die U. S. Supreme
I Court tha broke down Georgia's “county unit” election sys-
(tem, which led to the “one man, one vote” decision.
! When the Peace Corps was set up by President Kennedy
in 1961, Morris Abram became its first General Counsel. In
1965,President Johnson appointed him United States rep
resentative to the United Nations Commission on Human
Rights, He is now senior advisor to the United States Mission
to the United Nations.
Abram was a dose friend of the late Adlai Stevenson and
has succeeded him as president of the 20th Century Fund, a
philanthropic foundation interested in the promotion of social
and economic research. .
In Jewish communal activities, he made an outstanding
contribution to the field of Jewish community relations, first
in the South and then nationally. He served for a time as
[ advisor to the Southern Regional Office of ADL and later
to the Southern area office of the American Jewish Com
mittee. He is at present the national president of the Amer
ican Jewish Committee. It is during his term of office as presi
dent that the American Jewish Committee rejoined the Na
tional Community Relations Advisory Council, which is the
national cooperative and coordinating body in this field of
Jewish activity.
Morris Abram is an able and brilliant lawyer, who has
received national recognition in the legal profession. He is
an eloquent orator and a clear thinker on public issues. He
has, been fearless in his denunciation of injustice, bigotry,
prejudice, and discrimination against any individual or group
in thhucountry or anywhere else on the face af this globe.
£e *will be stepping into an office following the first
pnsdMtaBt °f Brandeis, Dr. Abram L. Sachar, who literally
laid the foundation for a great university.
W€ feel confident that Morris Abram will carry forward
toe trtUKjtoPB of Brandeis University and will add luster and
honor to the achievements of the university.
