OUR FILM FOLK
By HERBERT G. LUFT
(Copyright, 1968, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)
HOLLYWOOD—
JOSEPH E. LEVINE, toe glo
bal film maker, was in town for
the Academy Awards presenta
tions which netted one “Oscar”
for the director of his picture,
“The Graduate,” Berlin-born
Mike Nichols. During an exclus
ive interview for JTA, Levine
told us about his six new pro
ductions for Embassy Pictures.
First of ail, Levine has purch
ased the motion picture rights to
Paddy Chayefsky’s latest play,
‘The Latent Heterosexual,”
scheduled to open at Hollywood’s
Huntington Hartford Theatre
early in May. Chayefsky current
ly is writing his own screenplay
for Levine. Zero Mostel who cre
ates the title role on toe stage
will also appear in the film por
traying a novelist who tries to
evade high income taxes by
taking a wife, a girl of question
able virtue, to increase his de
ductible items, though he is a
homosexual who really doesi’t
want to get married. As always
in toe work of Chayefsky, humor
and pathos are interwoven in the
pattern of this comedy of errors.
Earlier still, Levine will shoot
in England this summer a light
comedy, “Nice Girl Like Me,” in
which Barbara Ferris, the British
star of Broadway’s “ThjereTs a
yGirl in My Soup,” makes her
screen debut.
Levine revealed to me that the
often postponed alpine film, “The
Ski Bum,” from the novel of
French diplomat Romain Gary,
with a screenplay by Sidney Car-
roll, rolls this coming fall in
Switzerland with Martin Poll
producing for Embassy Pictures.
The story of today’s lost genera
tion of aimless and worldly youth
is starring Warren Beatty and not
Peter O’Toole as originally an
nounced. Levine is in Litigation
with director Ana foie Litvak and
no new director has as yet been
set.
“Little Me,” from toe pen of
Patrick Dennis—author of Aun
tie Marne," on Broadway with
Sid Caesar, is being transposed
for Levine into a film musical
with Larry Gilbom writing the
screenplay. Harold Robbins, whose
“The Carpetbaggers” brought
millions into the till of Em
bassy, is the author of two
new Levine pictures, “The
Adventurers,” for which toe nov
elist has written his Own scen
ario, with Lewis Gilbert (of
“Alfie”) directing this last Para
mount-Embassy co-venture; and
the only in hoc* form available,
“Stiletto,” bought for the screen
by Levine but not yet developed.
MIKE NICHOLS has been sign
ed by Levine for a new film to be
produced after the director com
pletes Joseph Heller’s “Catch 22”
for Martin Ransohoff.
Already completed on location
in Ireland and France is Levine’s
multi-million dollar historical
epic, “The lion in Winter,” from
the novel by James Goldman
dealing with the struggle of three
sons of Henry II of England;
Richard the Iionhearted, Geof
frey and John of “Magna Carta”
fame, for the succession to toe
throne. Peter O’Toole portrays
Henry, and Academy-Award win
ner Katharine Hepburn his am
bitious wife, Queen Eleanor of
Aquitaine. The Hollywood For
eign Press Association will have
the sole West Coast premiere of
toe film in October, according to
a commitment by the producer.
Other films completed abroad
by Levine are “Tutti Frutti,” star
ring Israeli Gila Golan, the Ital
ian Vittorio Giassman and toe
American Martha Hyer. Original-

actor, who in his twenty years
in Hollywood has appeared in
over sixty roles—-mostly portray
ing Russian generals and German
spies — and co-starred in five
Broadway shows with toe Lunts,
Katherine Cornell and Elaine

rael on a short visit to entertain
troops during the Independence
Day celebration. Ben-Astar also
prepares a motion picture based
on his own experience as mem
ber of the Palestine regiment of
the British army in North Africa.
It is little known that toe Is
raelis, all of them volunteers, in
the spring of 1944 raised toe
“Flag of David” with the “blue-
star” symbol over toe fortress of
Bengasi in Libya in defiance
against toe British policy to con
fine toe Jews to menial chores
within toe armed farces. One
thousand members of toe Pal
estine regiment were imprisoned
for nine months until the Jew
ish Brigade was commissioned
and toe Hebrew warriors moved
on as a fighting formation to the
Anzio beachhead of Italy.
Ben-Astar, a fifth-generation
“Sabra,” plans to shoot his pic
ture in Israel for an American
company.
