Nearest Since
Six-Day War
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Prime
Minister Levi Eshkol said at a
press conference here that he did
not regard United Nations Am
bassador Gunnar Jarring’s mis
sion as having brought peace
nearer but that he believed, in
general that “we are probably
nearer peace now than we have
been at any time since the Six-
Day War.”
The prime minister chided UN
Secretary-General U Thant who
is held responsible by many here
for encouraging Jordan to bring
iby complaint against Israel’s In
dependence Day parade in Jerus
alem before the Security Council.
Mr. Eshkol said the Secretary^
General should not be surprised
to learn that his image in Israel
is now “a little tarnished.”
Mr. Eshkol said there was no
pressure whatsoever being
brought to bear on Israel by the
United States, adding that “of
course, we cannot see eye to eye
on every issue.” Referring appar
ently to the Phantom jet, the
most modem American superson
ic plane, the Prime Minister said
he believed that Israel will get
the aircraft requested from the
United States.
As to the slower Skyhawks.
which the United States is sup
plying, Mr. Eshkol said he would
have preferred to receive Israel’s
entire order in one shipment or
at least In larger monthly de
liveries. But, he said, he under
stood that the U. S. Air Force was
also pressing for deliveries.

prison at hard labor by a Bem-
berg court after being convicted
of participating in the murder of
at least 1,300 Serbian Jews in
1941 and organizing the deporta
tion of some 2,000 Rumanian
Jews from France in 1942. Rade-
macher’s sentence was temporily
suspended for reasons of health
and his attorney will enter an
appeal.
The prosecution had asked for
a 15-year prison term for the
defendant who was head of the
section for Jewish affairs in the
Nazi foreign office from 1938 to
1943. During that time, he made
a number of trips to Belgrade to

In 1942, he did the same in
France where Jews who fled
