JERUSALEM (JTA) — Former
President Harry S. Truman, in a
speech read here, called on all
nations, “especially those that
tend toward belligerency,” to
“forsake the primitive folly of
the battlefield for the sane,
sensible and civilized way of the
conference table” to settle in

The words of the former Presi

Slum Cleanup

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Is
rael Government has expropriated
16 acres of land in the Jewish
quarter of East Jerusalem for a
slum clearance project and also
took over a large paroel of land
’ in a former Jewish suburb which
was occupied by the Jordanians
in 1943. The expropriation orders
were published in the official ga
zette.
The property in East Jerusa
lem includes buildings erected
since 1948 which house 600
Arabs. The buildings stand on
the site of scores of synagogue®,
yeshivas and other schools which
the Jordanians tore down. The
Arabs who are to be dispossessed,
will receive compensation. They
will be permitted to go to court
to contest the sums offered them.
Officials explained that the ex
propriation was necessary in
order to re-plan the entire quar
ter. which degenerated into a
slum during the past 20 years.
Much of the land involved be
longs to Jewish institutions. None
of it. however, is Moslem religi
ous property or belongs to for
eign institutions, officials said.
The second expropriation order
rovers land in Kfar Ivri (Neve
Yaacov) which was officially in
corporated into the Jerusalem mu
nicipality last year. Jews evacu
ated the suburb when Jerusalem
was under siege in 1948 and it
was subsequently occupied __ by
Jordan. Most of the land now
being take over by the State was
occupied by an Arab Legion mil
itary camp. Some of it belongs to
Jews and less than 10 percent
belonged to Arabs, according to
fhe officials.

Congressmen Would Insist
Nasser Meet Stiff Terms
WASHINGTON (JTA) — A
group of 24 Democratic and Re
publican Representatives joined
with Rep. Seymour Halpem, New
York Republican, in co-sponsor
ing a resolution to withhold res
umption of diplomatic relations
and economic aid from Egypt
until President Nasser entered
into peace talks with Israel and
also meit other conditions.
Introducing the resolution on
the House floor, Rep. Haipem
said the United States was en
titled to “fundamental conces
sions” so that renewal of rela
tions with Egypt would not be
“a one-way street.” He reminded
his colleagues that Nasser severed
relations “in a fit of vitupera
tion” and made false charges that
United States planes took part in
the June war against Egypt and
that Nasser continued to preach
“the annihilation of Israel.”
The resolution would bar re
newal of diplomatic ties until
Egypt publicly admitted within
that country that the United
States planes made no attack, that
Egypt compensate the United
States for damages inflicted on
United State® consulates and that
Egypt begin peace talks with Is
rael.
