(A Seven Arts Feature)
A stale joke is the one about
rabbinate not being a job Dor a
Jewish boy.
Actually, this a fine time to be
a rabbi.
A few decades ago the syna
gogue was slip
ping away from
oenter of Jewish
life.
Now it is mak
ing a fine come
back.
Jewish values
are being recog
nized.
Attendance at synagogue is be
coming a fixed part of the lives
of thousands of Jews.
The rabbi is a person of pres
tige.
So if you want your son to
enjoy a fine career, he might
think of tlie rabbinate.
But let him not think of the
rabbinate before pondering the
profession. Let him not think of
any calling without research. For
the worst thing we can do, my
friends, is to enter a vocation for
which we are not really suited.
If you want your son to get
an idea of what the rabbinate is
like as a profession, buy him a
book called “Your Future as a
Rabbi.”
In it, a splendid writer, himself
a rabbi, Dr. Alfred Gottsohalk,
provides valuable data about the
rabbinate.
His data encompasses all three
Jewish denominations.
Worth the price of the book
($4) is the directory of every
seminary in the United States
and the organizations sponsoring
them. Even the Reconstructionist
Foundation, which recently an
nounced the formation of a new
kind of rabbinical training at
Temple University, is listed.
Dr. Gottsohalk, dean of Los
Angeles branch of the Reform
seminary, is a most helpful guide
to an intriguing subject. You may
get his book at your local book
store or from the publisher, Rich

Capital ADL Seeks To Bar
“Segregationist Pattern”
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Re
sponding to indications that the
District of Columbia government
has succumbed to “black power”
demands that white merchants —
Jewish and non-Jewish — cease
trading in Negro neighborhoods,
the local unit of the B’nai B’rith
Anti-Defamation League has ap
pealed to Mayor Walter E. Wash
ington to avoid “a segregationist
pattern” in D.C. business life.
Alvin J. {Steinberg, chairman of
the executive committee, regional
ADL board also appealed to the
Mayor to form an advisory group
that would include synagogue
and human rights groups as well
as Negro economic development
organizations, Government offi
cials, church organizations, citi
zens associations, and others.
Commenting on remarks that
reconstruction of Washington
should include removal of white
merchants, Mr. Steinberg said
“a number of statements have
been issued this past week stat
ing that people who live in the
areas devastated by civil dis
orders should play a role in re
structuring those areas and hu
man lives as well. We wholly
agree with the soundness of this
approach — except that we must
not permit it to become unilateral
— it must include those who live
economically in the area as well. ’
Mr. Steinberg told the Mayor
that “w* fully understand the im
perative of the Negro community
to build a'stable anS progressive
economic base — but to build
that base in a segregationist pat
tern can only serve to under
mine its foundation.”
