Dr. Marvin C. Goldstein, gen
eral chairman of the Atlanta
Jewish Welfare Federation’s 1968
Campaign, announced this week
that a final report meeting for
this year’s campaign has been
scheduled for 12:15 p.m. May 16,
at the Progressive Club.
Dr. Goldstein earlier announced
that May 15 was the target date
set for completion of all cards
and he urged all those participat
ing in the campaign to establish
this date as a firm goal. He stated
that “a campaign mailer had been
sent to the entire Jewish com
munity stressing the urgency in
completing all outstanding pledge
cards and returning them to the
Federation offioe no later than
May 15.” Dr. Goldstein asked for
the support and encouragement of
all contributors within the At
lanta Jewish community who had
not already made their contribu
tion to the annual campaign. He
stated that “The success of our
campaign depends on each and
everyone of us doing his share.
When you are contacted by a cam
paign volunteer, please respond
generously. Israel, as well as our
own local agencies, here in At
lanta, need our support.”
Pledges received to-date for
both the Regular and Emergency
Fund campaign amounted to
$1,725,000.
Campaign Vice Chairman David
Goldwassar noted that the figures
indicated an increase to-date foe
the regular campaign. He stated
that “the $1,110,000 goal far the
regular campaign is now within
our reach and it is now a matter
of accounting for each and every
outstanding pledge card.” Regard
ing the Emergency Campaign
Goal of $1,500,000, Goldwasser
stated “our Jewish community
has always measured up to its
expectations and that with in
creased effort on the part of all
chairmen and workers during this
final two weeks period, we shall
meet this goal.” He asked that
all completed cards be turned in
at the Report Luncheon, May 16.
Dr. Joseph Schwartz to Install
Atlanta Bond Leaders May 19
Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, execu
tive vice president of the State of
Israel Bond Organization, who
has been a key figure during the
past two decades in shaping and

rescue, relief and migration of
large numbers of Jews overseas
in the most crucial period in mod
em Jewish history, will be guest
of honor at a dinner-reception to
install the officers and executives
of the Atlanta Israel Bond Com
mittee.
The announcement was made
by Isidore Alterman, chairman of
the Atlanta Israel Bond Commit
tee and the Board of Governors.
The reception will take place
Sunday, May 19, at the Progres
sive Club at 6 p. m., with dinner

Prior to assuming leadership of

tens of thousands of Jews from
Nazi Germany and occupied Eur

In 1945, immediately following
the war’s end in Europe, Presi
dent Truman named Dr. Schwartz
to accompany Earl G. Harrison
on a survey tour of the then new
ly established displaoed persons
camps in the American zones of
occupation. Their report was the
first comprehensive presentation
to the American people describ
ing the plight of Europe’s dis
plaoed persons. Later, Dr.
Schwartz was called to testify be
fore the Anglo-American Com
mittee of Inquiry on Palestine,
where he urged the establishment
Dr. Joseph Schwartz
in the Holy Land of a perman
ent haven for homeless and dis
placed Jews.
After the war, Dr. Schwartz,
as the overseas chief of the JDC,
directed the transfer to Israel of
more than 500,000 Jews from dis
tressed areas in Europe, North
Africa, and the Middle East. At
the same time, he helped more
than 100,000 Jewish displaced
persons emigrate to the United
States, Canada and Latin Amer
ica.
For his work on behalf of ref
ugees Dr. Schwartz was awarded
the Legion of Honor of France
and was decorated by Poland and

of Long Island University. Im
mediately preceding his appoint-

Federation of Jewish Charities in
Brooklyn.

was elected a member orf the
Board of Governors of Dropsie
College for Hebrew and Cognate

having Dr. Schwartz with us on
this auspicious occasion,” stated
Mr. Alterman. “He has establish
ed an enviable record of leader
ship in the cause of Israel, and
it is through the efforts of him
and people like him that the State
of Israel is now observing its
twentieth anniversary of indepen
