In Great Neck, New York,
there’s a congregation so pop

of a son, they invited the con
gregation to worship with them
one Sabbath eve when the child
would be formally named and
blessed.
On that occasion Rabbi David
son offered a supplication on be
half of his son. It is a gem of a
statement of his child and con
veying graphically the finest ob
jectives of parenthood. The fa
ther’s prayer is so exquisite that
it warrants a large audience.
Here it is. Read it and let your
heart leap:
“O Lord Our God,
“I come before Thee in loving
gratitude for the most precious
of all gifts, new life, with which
Thou hast blessed our home. In
humble thanksgiving for the
birth of our son, we his parents
bring hearts overflowing with
joy unto Thee this night.
“In this sanctuary dedicated to
Thee, we ask for wisdom and
strength to meet the challenge
of raising our child to live a
good and worthy life. May we
never forget the awesome res
ponsibility which we seek to ful
fill, nor take for granted the
sacred privilege of parenthood
and the ennobling task of teach
ing our son to live by the values
and ideals of our faith.
“We now bestow upon him,
Oh God, the name within his
faith of Y’hoshua Meechawayl
ben Yirmeeyawhu and in his
community, Joshua Michael Da
vidson.
“May he always wear the
crown of a good name among
his people. With loyalty and
commitment, may he grow to
care about his heritage and
birthright. With dedication and
eagerness may he learn to love
his people and their mission.
“May he seek always to walk
in the paths of knowledge and
wisdom; may he ever speak
words of compassion and under
standing. Grant, Oh God, unto
him and his generation days and
years of harmony and brother
hood among men that he might
be able to fulfill himself to the
best of his ability. May he al
ways be true unto himself and
faithful to his fellowmen; may
he Igrow in maturity and
strength that he might bring to
fruition the hopes and dreams
of his parents, grandparents and
all who love him.
“Bless our baby son, O Lord,
with health and love, laughter
and delight across the years that
are to be. May his years be
many and may he live in peace.
“Amen.’’

QUIZ
(Copyright, 1968, Jewish

QUESTION: Why is the Book of
Ruth read in the synagogue on
Shavuot?
ANSWER: This practice is
known to us from literature
which dates back at least from
the time of the Gaonim, and
perhaps earlier. One source ex
plains that the Book of Ruth is
read on Shavuot because the
festival of Shavuot commemo
rates the Revelation at Mount
Sinai which is the event at which
the Torah was given to the peo
ple of Israel. The purpose in
reading the Book of Ruth was to
present a story of the suffering
and plight which is characteris
tic of the incidents of the Book.
Just as the widow Ruth went
through a period of hardships
until she was redeemed, so too
must the people of Israel be able
and willing to endure suffering
and hardship in order to retain
its right to the Torah. (Yalkut
Shim’oni, Ruth 5%). A medieval
writer (Abudraham) gives two
other reasons for reading the
Book of Ruth on Shavuot. One
is that the Book describes the
critical events as happening at
the time of the barley harvest
and that such is thd time of Sha-
vout. Also, that Ruth seems to
present the classical example of
conversion since she was orig
inally a Moabite woman. The
people of Israel seemed to have
undergone a process of conver
sion when they accepted the To
rah at Sinai. Still another au
thor (L’vush 494) claims that
the Book of Ruth is read to dem
onstrate the association of the
Biblical description of the ob
servances of the festival with
BOX
the Commandment to be con
siderate of the poor and the
stranger at harvest time (Levi
ticus 23:22). A number of writ
ers (e.g., T’vuoth Shor) claim
that the Book of Ruth is read on
Shavuot because Shavuot is
the birthday of David and the
Book of Ruth traces the geneol-
ogy of King David from his an
cestry in Ruth.
