HAIFA—If the courts of a na
tion serve as reflection of the life
which that nation leads, I won
der what kind of picture can be
obtained from
quick survey of|
some of th<
oases w h i c 1
came before the
bar of justice ini
this oou n t r y .|
Some examples:
A nine-year-
old boy got intol
a fight in his|
classroom. Four Alpert
teeth were knocked out. His par
ents sued the teacher, the prin
cipal, the city authorities and
the Ministry of Education.
The five-year-old daughter of
an Israeli Moslem was killed in
an automobile accident. The fa
ther sued for damages of IL. 10,-
000, amount he would have re
ceived as “mohar” (bride price)
when marrying her off.
A 26-year-old Israeli boy was
hailed into court for writing let
ters threatening to kill the army
doctor. His complaint: He had

been ruled unfit for army serv
ice, but insisted on doing his
share of military duty.
A workman riding to his job
on a motor scooter, stopped off
at the synagogue for early morn
ing prayer. On his way out he
had an accident which incapaci
tated him for a month. He sued
to obtain recognition that the
accident had been incurred
while in normal transit to his
work, thus entitling him to
workmen’s compensation.
A Tel Aviv bus driver be
came involved in an argument
with a passenger, and charged
him with “chutzpa” (impudence).
The passenger sued — and the
driver was fined IL. 100 for vio
lating basic rules of public
courtesy.
A 31-year-old Israeli Moslem,
found guilty of beating his wife,
appealed the verdict, basing
himself on the Koran, which
gives a husband the right to
“educate” his wife, similar to
the right of a parent to discip
line his child. The court admitt
ed the validity of the Koran reg
ulation, but found that the wife’s
actions had not been such as to
merit such “education.”
Three Arabs were convicted of
espionage and sent to jail. Money
found in their possession was con
fiscated. They appealed, and the
Israel Supreme Court ruled that
there were no legal grounds for
the confiscation. Their money was
returned to them.
Eyebrows were raised when
the police of Ashkelon brought
charges against a prisoner for
damaging public property: he
had broken a teaspoon worth
half a Pound. It turned out that
after breaking the spoon he
claimed that he had swallowed
a piece of it. He was rushed to
the hospital for two days of
X-Ray and careful treatment,
but the missing half a spoon was
never found. The only way the
police could obtain satisfaction
was to prefer charges for des
truction of public property.
A 43-year-old Tel Aviv citi
zen sent a postcard to a public
body offering his vote in a cur
rent election for IL. 80 — and
asked for a counter offer if his
price was too high. He was ar
rested. His lawyer pleaded that
the man was politically naive,
and the judge gave him a one
month suspended sentence.
