SILVER
LIMING
By DR. SAMUEL SILVER
(A Seven Arts Feature)
This year of surprises has in
cluded one of the most bizarre
episodes in recent Jewish history;
the visit to these shores of the
Moscow rabbi.
They call him
chief rabbi, but
actually he’s vir
tually the only
one In Moscow,/
and one of the*
few left in Rus
sia.
Brought here
by that small
anti-Zionist cabal mis-named the
American Counoil for Judaism,
the venerable and often bewilder
ed rabbi was later turned over
to a group of ultra-Orthodox
Jewish leaders.
From (the moment Rabbi Levin
landed at the airport, his cortege
included as weird a mishmash of
Jews as anyone could imagine.
The anti-Zionist leader, an ultra-
Reform Jew (denounced by Re
form Judaism) was surrounded
by traditionalist rabbis who vied
with him for the attention of the
Muscovite. When Rabbi Levin
spoke in New York, his evident
fear of favoring Zionism — cur
rently disapproved by his Soviet
masters—kept him from joining
in the singing of the Hatikvah.
And his companion, a clean-cut
and clean-shaven Leningrad can
tor, who accompanies himself on
a guitar, sedulously avoided sing
ing anything out of Israel. And
the anti-Zionists were baffled by
the rabbi’s Yiddish.
In his hotel room, in walks
through New York, in conversa
tions with Rabbis Hesohel, Fein-
stein, Soloveitahik and others,
the Moscow rabbi protested that
Jews live well in Russia. To his
face everyone agreed, seeking
neither to discomfit nor to em
barrass the visitor.
Only those on the inside know
how this odd juxtaposition of the
American Council for Judaism
and European rabbis came about.
The one allegedly responsible is
a young academician named
Dr. Morton Mezvinsky, who came
from Iowa like a Loohinavar to
save the anti-Zionist group from
decline. It happened that Mez
vinsky is an Orthodox Jew who
derived his anti-Zionism from
such far-right sources as the Ne-
turei Karta who say that only
means can bring about the re
demption of the Holy Land.
It was Mezvinsky who alleged
ly initiated the invitation that
surprisingly got Soviet consent
and the OK of the rabbi. Sub
sequently Mezvinsky had a fall
ing-out with the council and left
his post before Rabbi Levin ar
rived. A colleague of Mezvinsky,
also temporarily on the staff of
the council is suing the organiza
tion for a million dollars follow
ing his cashiering.
The entire story of the visit
would make an intriguing vol
ume. Perhaps it will improve the
bond between Russian and Amer
ican Jews. But it sure is bizarre.
