Rabbi Wernick To Receive
Ph.D. Degree on August 23
Rabbi Nissim Wernick, the
new spiritual leader otf Congre
gation Shearith Israel, will very
shortly return to Salt Lake City,
Utah, for a brief visit in order
to accept the Ph.D. Degree in
Bible.
The degree will be conferred
upon him by Brigham Young
University at commeacement ex
ercises on August 23.
Rabbi Wernick holds the
unique distinction of being the
only Jew ever to receive a grad
uate degree from Brigham
Young’s School of Religion,
which was founded in 1880.
For his dissertation, Rabbi
Wernick selected “A Critical
Analysis of the Book of Abra
ham in Light of Extra Cannon-
ical Jewish Writings,”
In this he interpreted one ol
the Mormon's own scriptures,
based on Abraham’s life in Egypt,

Rabinowitz, who entered the
hotel business in 1951 as man
ager of the family-owned Jef
ferson Hotel in Atlanta, is pres
ently managing the family-owned
Rodeway Inn in Decatur. He
leaves this week, with Mr. Breg
man, for Detroit to confer with
officials of Home’s Enterprises,
Inc. about a series of Home’s
Motor Lodges which the Pied
mont Engineering and Construc
tion Corporation will build and
the Piedmont Motel Management
under Rabinowitz’s direction, will
manage.
First on the list of Home’s fa
cilities to be handled by the vari
ous Piedmont firms, is a one-mil-
lion-dollar-plus motor lodge now
under construction in Jackson
ville at the intersection of Inter
state 95 and University Drive.
The 122-room lodge is owned by
the Piedmont, Motel Corporation
while Piedmont Development and
Investment Corporation (a pub
lic-owned stock company incorp
orated in the state of Georgia) is
the principal stockholder of the
ownership company. Four other
cities have been optioned to fran
chise.
No newcomer to the field of
motel management, Rabinowitz
formerly operated Gary’s Motel
in Atlanta and the Mimosa Motel
in Marietta. He is a former chair
man of the board of directors of
