Yom Kippur
GUEST EDITORIAL
Its theme is prayer and forgiveness.
Over the year we sinned against God and man, and
now we stand in expectation and in hope that our pleas
will be heard and our wishes granted in the fullness of mea
sure on the scale of judgment.
Yom Kippur, which is the Sabbath of Sabbaths because
of its sublime sanctity, symbolizes rest.
It is a still day, a day when we whisper rather than
talk, when we think rather than articulate, when we walk
softly, hopefully in humility, and when we are with our
selves in aloneness. On that day we unburdened ourselves
of the darknesses, the secrets and the sins which weighed
us down during the year, and we are as if born again, at
peace with man, God and the world.
Now only the judgment stands before us and the future.
Yet we will be leaving the threshold of our sanctuaries in
the faith that the decree will be diverted by repentance,
prayer and charity.
Thus the essence of this day is faith and abiding hope,
for without them we could not survive the storm and the
turmoil to which we are now returning.
Best wishes to all out friends for a
Happy Healthy New Year

Rabbi Wernick Urges t otal
Holiday Observance
By RABBI NISS1M WERNICK
The proper observance of our
religious holidays is fundamen
tal to our faith. Rabbinic associ
ations and individual rabbis
have been much concerned
about a lack of awareness on
the part of many Jews and their
responsibility to their faith and
to their children.
Many Rabbinical Associations
have issued a call to their res
pective Jewish community — a
call which unfortunately I have
not heard in Atlanta. Let this
then be the call to our commun
ity and to our rabbis to awaken
them to constructive action in
arousing our Jews to their res
ponsibility.
We appeal to Jewish parents
on a matter of great importance
to their children. We know that
all parents are aware of the im
portance of spiritual develop
ment for the over all well being
of the individual. To strengthen
our children’s spiritual life is to
increase their capacity for hap
piness and fulfillment. Holiday
services and celebrations are
the most effective means fash
ioned by our tradition for the
spiritual enrichment of the
child. The public schools are
aware of this and favor such
spiritual development. For this
reason they have made it possi
ble for all students to observe
their religious holidays. School
authorities are informed of such
observances.
We, therefore, call upon all
Jewish parents to arrange for
their children to stay out of
school during the holidays and
to attend religious services.
Thus will our children be

wish all their friends
and relatives
A Very Happy New Year
strengthened in our faith and
find joy and meaning in Jew
ish living.
A call of this nature as a
result of the combined effort
of our rabbis, is sorely needed
in our community and perhaps-
this may be the lone voice that
will rouse our colleagues to ac
tion.
The first two days of Sukkot
are Monday and Tuesday, Oc
tober 7 and 8, and the last two
days — Shminee Atzeret and
Simchat Torah are Monday and
Tuesday, October 24 and 25.
There will not only be Adult
Services at that time but also
regularly scheduled services for
Junior Congregations.
Sukkot is a holiday for fam
ily celebration. Do plan to come
to services as a family unit.
Sukkot is a festival of thanks
giving. When and where in the
history of our people has a
Jewish Community had greater
cause to give thanks to God
than we American Jews in
1968?
