Youngman, born in London,
grew up in Brooklyn. As a child,
he studied the violin and eventu
ally organized a small band which
played at weddings. He made his
first big splurge in radio on the
famous old Kate Smith show and
his career brought him to the; top

Edbert R. Harris. Mrs. Goodrich
is the former Susan Ellen Harris,

sonnel who gathered in Da Nang,
Viet Nam, for Rosh Hashana and
Yom Kippur services. He is the
son of Mrs. Ida Solomon of At
lanta.
Murray was awarded a gold
Star of David by the attending
Rabbi in recognition of his suc
cessful efforts in organizing Fri
day night servioes in Chu Lai.
He was also honored by being
called upon to open the Ark and
present the Torah at the open
ing of the High Holiday services
in Da Nang.

Temple Lists Rabin Speaks in Richmond
Class Format To Two Leadership Groups
The adult education committee
of the Temple has announced a
change in format for its Monday
evening Program of Adult Edu
cation.
Beginning Monday, Oct. 14,
three separate classes will run
from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Rabbi
Jacob M. Rothchild will lead the
course entitled “Great Jewish
Affirmations,” studying basic
theological ideas.
Rabbi Philip M. Posner will
conduct the course on “The Jew
and His God — Evolution and
Revolution,” tracing Jewish con
cepts of God as they have evolved
through the ages.
“American Judaism — Retro
spect and Prospect” will be under
the direction of Larry Schwartz,
educational director, and will ex
plore the origins of American
Judaism, the effect of Jews and
Judaism upon America, the ef
fect of America on Jews and Ju
daism and the future of the
American Jewish community.
These classes will run for six
weeks. The winter program fol
lowing will be in the form of a
forum series to be announced
later.
The sessions axe open to mem
bers of the congregation and
their friends but registration is
requested.
Bat Ami To Hear
Rabbi Wernick
Rabbi Nissim Wernick, new re
ligious leader of Congregation
Shearith Israel, will be the
speaker at the October 20 meet
ing of Bat Ami Hadassah, which
will be held at the home of Mrs.
K. Sunshine, 1293 Breezy Lane,
N. E., at 3 p. m.
Rabbi Wemiek’s topic will be
“A Parallel Approach Between
Mormonism and Judaism.”
Co-hostesses for the social hour
will be Mrs. Ida Beerman, Mrs.
Rae Gilner and Mrs. Harry Gil-
ner. All members and friends are
invited.

Declare Dividend
CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — The
Board of Directors of Carolina
Freight Carriers Corporation,
headquartered here, has declared
its regular quarterly dividend of
17 cents per share on common
stock. It is payable November 8.
Carolina, one of the nation’s
leading interstate motor carriers,
serves 20 states and the District
of Columbia, through 32 termin
als located in the Southeast, the
Northeast, and the Midwest.

NEW YORK — Itzhak Rabin,
Israeli Ambassador to the United
States and Chief of Staff of
Israel’s Defense Forces during
the Six Day War, appeared in
Norfolk, Va., September 29 to
address two major gatherings of
Jewish leaders.
Rabin appeared at noon be
fore more than 500 delegates to
a statewide Young Leadership
Conference of the United Jewish
Appeal, his first such appearance
outside New York City. He also
addressed the closing luncheon
of the two-day session at the
Lakewright Motor Lodge that
brought together 500 men and
women from 25 to 40 and who
hold leadership roles in Jewish
philanthropic, religious, welfare
and educational programs in their
Virginia communities.
Rabin made his second appear
ance of the day as the principal
speaker at the closing banquet
of a tri-state assemblage of 350
key Jewish leaders from Virginia,
North Carolina and South Caro
lina. The banquet was used to
announce the organization of a
new tri-state region of the United
Jewish Appeal.
During the first day of the
Young Leadership Conference,
the delegates heard major ad
dresses by David Schoenbrum,
the television news analyst and
commentator, and Rabbi Irving
Greenberg of the Riverside Syna
gogue in New York. The confer
ence examined the role of Jewish
community agencies in combat
ting urban problems at home.
Also discussed were the needs
overseas of 300,000 unabsorbed
Jewish immigrants in Israel and
the thousands of Jewish refugees
from Arab lands and Eastern
Europe whose journeys, mostly
to Israel, were sparked by the
Six Day War.
