Wallace is riding the crest of a
wave that swept away Abe For-
tas’ chance to become America’s
first Jewish Chief Justice.
This is not to suggest that anti-
Semitism is sweeping the nation.
The reactionary tide is a confused
blend of conservatism and racism.
Millions of Americans are con
vinced that the nation is falling
victim to anarchy, crime, black
power, disastrous federal spends
ing, inflation, crooked politicians,
pseudo-intellectuals, Communists,
permissive social workers, porno
graphy, LSD, and a Supreme
Court that coddles criminals.
Such people are bitter because
America is changing. They are
frightened. They live in fear of
riots and revolts. They see the
country “falling apart.” The Su
preme Court is blamed not only
for codding criminals but for al
legedly imposing black control on
white citizens. American defeat in
Vietnam is attributed to alleged
treachery and incompetenoe in
high places.
The popular mood of reaction
defeated Mr. Fortas. It influ
enced more than enough Sena
tors—northern and southern, Re
publican and Democratic.
Mr. Fortas’ Jewish background
did not help him. Jews in Con
gress have concluded that Presi
dent Johnson and the Supreme
Court, headed by Chief Justice
Earl Warren, a Republican, are
so widely resented that any lib
eral “crony” of the President
would also have met opposition.
Anti-Semites, overt and latent,
just poured it on with special,
added zeal because Mr. Fortas
is a Jew.
The Fortas case did not make
an anti-Semitic activist of Sen.
Robert Griffin, Michigan Repub
lican, or even of such anti-Fortas
stalwarts as Sen. James Eastland,
Mississippi Democrat. Nor did it
establish that Mr. Wallace and
His Vice Presidential nominee,
Gen. Curtis Le May, are prejud
iced against Jews.
The reasons for Senators rising
against the Supreme Court are
identical with the factors gener
ating mobs for the Wallace cam
paign. An Alabama politician re
garded by many as a rabble-rou
ser and buffoon has captured the
imagination of those he terms the
“real Americans” and “simple
folk.”
Mr. Wallace offers easy ans
wers to complex problems. He
would exert police power against
crime, silence dissent, restore
schools to local control, fire the
officials of the Health, Educa
tion and Welfare Department—
and throw their briefcases into
the Potomac River.
His simple solutions apparent
ly appeal to more than 21 percent
of the voters. The Wallace polit
ical stock continues to rise des
pite—or because of—great TV
and press exposure.
Richard M. Nixon has display
ed contempt for Mr. Wallace.
Vice President Hubert H. Hum
phrey went so far as to suggest
a similarity between the Wallace
movement and Nazism.
Anti-Wallace pickets, black and
white, have displayed swastikas
and shouted “Sieg Heil” at Wal
lace appearances. University his
torians have cited Hitler as the
source of the Wallace slogan as
serting that there is not ten cents
worth of difference between the
Republicans and Democrats. Hit
ler told the poor, hard-working
Germans they could not find a
“pfenning’s difference” between
the capitalists and Communists.
Only the Nazis could save Ger
many.
The latest Gallup Poll disclosed
that four percent of American
Jewry, one of every 25 Jews,
favors Mr. Wallaoe for President.
The explanation is simple. Some
Jews share the fears and passions
exploited by Mr. Wallace. Negro
anti-Semitism is a major Jewish
concern, especially in New York
City.
Newsmen covering the recent
Zionist convention here noted
ZOA president Jacques Torczy-
ner’s scathing attack on black
power. They also observed the
glowing introduction of the mil
itary attache of the Union of
South Africa as an honored head
table guest. With the exception of
Israel, the racist South African
regime was the only foreign gov
ernment represented. Invitations
were not extended to the new
black nations of Africa.
