LUTHER ALVERSON,
JUDGE, ATLANTA
JUDICIAL CIRCUIT
Oct.4,11,18,25
Those in tea-viewed were only
Israeli Arabs, who have been
under the Israel flag, since 1948.
They did not include Druze, nor
Arabs of the recently occupied
areas. They were 428 males, all
over the age of 18, selected at
random from cities, towns and
farm villages of Israel. The in
terviewers, trained for the pur
pose, were also Arabs, and the
questionnaire was conducted in
Arabic. Each Arab was assured
of absolute anonymity, yet it is
interesting to note the refusal to
answer many of the questions.
Of the forty or more questions
asked, we select a few of the
more significant. In each instance,
the missing percentage is made
up for the most part of “Don’t
Know,” or “Refuse to answer.”
What do you think are the
prospects for peace in the Middle
East? Very remote — 37%. Re
mote — 25%. Close — 9%. Very
close — 2%.
But if peace is to come, with
what states are the chances
greater? Jordan — 26%. Lebanon
— 6%. Egypt — 5%. Syria —
1%. No state — 22%.
What should Israel do to bring
peace closer? Take back the
refugees — 32%. Return the oc
cupied areas — 29%. Adopt a
more aggressive policy — 3%.
What should the Arab states
do to bring peace closer? Recog
nize Israel — 26%. Agree to
face-to-face negotiations — 14%.
Permit Israel navigation in Suez
— 12%. Win the next war —
6%. Nothing; wait for the help
of Allah — 3%.
Israel’s Arabs were asked about
their reading and radio listening
habits. Some 42% read no news
papers at all. As for radio broad
casts, the largest percentage de
clared that they placed most con
fidence in what they heard from
London’s B.B.C. broadcasts, with
Israel and Egypt following in
that order.
The obvious question that
comes to mind is: To what ex
tent can we rely upon the verac
ity of the replies given? The
sponsors of the poll also asked
themselves that question. No less
than 63% of the interviewees
replied frankly, in answer to one
query, that there are certain deli
cate matters of politics and de
fense about which the Arabs
could not speak openly with
Jews. Nevertheless, the fact that
they did not hesitate to give
extremist views in their replies,
and the additional fact that they
could abstain from answering
(as many did) give added value
and integrity to the replies re
ceived.
Other questions: What Israel
leader, in your opinion, has the
best chance of bringing about
peace? None — 25%. Dayan —
14%. Eban — 14%. Eshkol —
10%. Allon — 6%. Abie Nathan
— 2%.
Would you want to live in the
same city with Jews? Yes —
79%. No — 15%.
Would you want to live in the
same house with Jews? Yes —
55%. No — 29%.
Do you think Jews would want
to live in the same house with
Arahs? Some, of them — 45%.
None — 23%.
And finally, if the Arahs had
won in 1948, and the state of
Israel had never come into exist
ence, would the situation of the
Arabs in what is now Israel be
Arahs approached on this ques
tion had no answer or abstained
from answering.
