Dr. Marvin Goldstein, President
Rabbi Rothschild
Honored by Clergy
By DIANE STEPP
CONSTITUTION RELIGION EDITOR
(From Issue of Sept. 26, 1968)
An ecumenical flavor transcending racial complexions,
ethnic variations or religious differences prevailed at cere
monies Wednesday (Sept. 25) night as the city’s ranking
clergymen paid tribute to
Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild,
spiritual leader of the Temple,
who was chosen as clergyman
of the year by the National
Conference of Christians and
Jews.
Rabbi Rothschild was presented
the NCCJ’s second annual Her
man L. Turner Clergyman’s
Award at a dinner at the Marriott
Motor Hotel attended by more
than 150 denominational leaders,
Temple members, government of
ficials and city leaders.
Making the presentation was
Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, first re
cipient of the award who said
Rabbi Rothschild has not only
been the spiritual leader of the
Temple but “for all people of all
faiths in our city.”
In accepting the honor, Rabbi
Rothschild praised the work of
the NCCJ in promoting under
standing among people of all
faiths and working toward the
elimination of prejudices and
hatred among persons of various
creeds.
He spoke of the ecumenical
spirit which the NCCJ has es
poused and expressed the hope
that the various creeds of unique
but separate traditions will one
day unite men.
The Jewish leader said that
appreciation and understanding
among persons of different faiths
does not mean there must be one
faith.
“Our own faith is deepened by
our joint cooperation and under
standing,” he said.
Atlanta Archbishop Thomas A.
Donnellan also spoke of ecumen
ism in a brief address and
pledged himself and the arch
diocese of Atlanta to the on-going
effort of the ecumenical spirit.
“Striving toward a better
ecumenical spirit is not an option,
but an obligation,” he said. “It
will require genuine brother
hood.”
In a tribute from the Atlanta
Roman Catholic community,
archdiocesan chancellor Father
Noel Burtenshaw called Rabbi
Rothschild “one of the outstand
ing religious leaders of our city
today.”
He mentioned the dinner which
Rabbi Rothschild helped to spon
sor in honor of the late Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., when he re
ceived the Nobel Peace Prize and
of his work on the Atlanta Hu
man Relations Council.
Extending greetings from the
Protestant faith was Dr. Robert
E. Lee, pastor of the Lutheran
Church of the Redeemer, who
said that Rabbi Rothschild pos
sesses the three marks of a great
man — deep compassion, consis
tent courage and genuine hu
mility.
Herbert A. Ringel, president
of The Temple, said that Rabbi
Rothschild is a man of God, a
man of theology and a man in
terested in his fellow men.
“Our congregation has been
blessed with a man with such a
rare combination,” he said.
The president of the Atlanta
Jewish Welfare Federation, Abe
H. Goldstein, said Rabbi Roths
child is the spiritual leader of
one of the largest Jewish con
gregations in the Southeast who
“has been the voice of equal
rights for all people.”
Dan E. Sweat Jr., director of
governmental liaison of the Of
fice of Mayor of Atlanta, praised
the rabbi’s efforts in helping to
solve the social problems of the
city. “There is none who deserves
greater thanks,” he said.
Giving the invocation was
Father Homer P. Goumenis, priest
of the Greek Orthodox Church of
the Annunciation. The Rev. Sam
uel W. Williams, pastor of Friend
ship Baptist Church, delivered
the benediction.
Providing music for the occa
sion was Samuel Pittman with
Dr. Johnson Hubert of the Morris
Brown College music department
as accompanist.
