Training Hassidic Jews
As Computer Programmers
NEW YORK (JTA) — A pio
neering project to train Hassidic
Jews to be computer operators
has begun at the Pratt Institute
in Brooklyn with Federal fund
ing. The initial class is comprised
of 23 Hassidic Jews and 12 Ne
groes, seven men and five
women.
All of the trainees are from
poverty areas and all are un
employed, according to Dr. Sol
Chaneles, president of Urban
Resources, a private firm organ
ized to develop and administer
urban programs for the poor on
a fee basis. He said 35 more job
less persons from Brooklyn
poverty areas would begin simi
lar training next month. There
are no tuition charges for the
trainees and each receives a
modest stipend for living ex
penses during the 39 weeks of
Dayan Scored
On Pessimism
About Peace
JERUSALEM (JTA) — De
fense Minister Gen. Moshe Dayan
has come under sharp criticism
in some political circles here for
the speech he delivered in Tel
Aviv in which he spoke pessi
mistically of early prospects for
peace with the Arabs. He said
Israel should consider annexing
the territories it occupied in
June, 1967 war unless the Arabs
agreed to peace. His critics main
tained that the opinions he ex
pressed ran counter to those held
by a large section of the Cabinet.
Prime Minister Levi Eshkol is
expected to say that he has hopes
for ‘‘peace in our time” and to
reiterate Israel’s willingness to
come to terms with any Arab
government, sources said.
Gen. Dayan, addressing the Na
tional Union of Israeli Students,
said the Arab countries which
lost 70 percent of their Air Forces
in the Six-Day War, had more
than replaced the losses and were
now 50 percent stronger in the
air than they were on the eve of
June, 1967.
He said Israel must be pre
pared for another Arab onslaught
and, at the same time, must
strive for peaceful co-existence
with the Arabs in the occupied
territories.
Gen. Dayan’s differences with
other Cabinet members were be
lieved to center around negotia
tions with Jordan. He was known
to oppose any separate agree
ment because he does not believe
that King Hussein would have
the power to implement it. Other
Cabinet members hold that Hus
sein could stick by an agreement
with Israel because he is backed
by such Arab rulers as the kings
of Saudi Arabiam Libya and
Morocco and could count on
United States and British sup
port.
Historic Vessel
Now Landbound
As Monument
HAIFA (JTA) — The Danish
fishing boat, Astrid, which was
part of a flotilla of small craft
that ferried nearly 8,000 Danish
Jews to safety in Sweden in
October 1943, has been perman
ently landbound as a monument
at the foot of Mount Carmel to
the bravery of the Danish people. 1
The monument was dedicated
in the presence of hundreds of
former Danish Jews whose lives
were saved by their fellow Danes
25 years ago and a like number
of former Danish resistance fight
ers who took part in that rescue
operation now visiting Israel to
commemmorate the event.
The Astrid, now property of
the Haifa Maritime Museum, was
purchased by Lawrence Schacht,
South Orange, N.J. businessman,
who is one of the leaders of the
United Jewish Appeal’s Israel
Education Fund, which is build
ing the Denmark High School,
Israel’s largest secondary schooL
training, Dr. Chaneles added.
The course is divided into two
parts — data processing mathe
matics, an<J programming, which
includes instruction in operating
IBM 360 computers. The com
puter programming course is be
ing given at the Pratt Institute
four days each week from 2:30
p.m. to 10 p.m. Tutoring classes
are held on Fridays at the In
stitute for the non-Jews and on
Sundays at Young Israel of
Brooklyn in Williamsburg for the
Jews. A Pratt instructor has been
assigned to the Young Israel Sun
day classes.
The program was started with
a $10,000 grant from the Fred
Richmond Foundation in Wil
liamsburg. A grant of $98,000 has
been received for the project
from the Manpower Office of
