Problems of College Youth, Israel and Cities Challenge
Before American Jewish Leadership in Atlanta Nov. 13-17

Leaders Expected For Sessions
The problems of Jewish youth
in America will highlight the
first day’s general sessions on
Thursday, November 14, of the
37th annual General Assembly of
the Council of Jewish Federa
tions and Welfare Funds to be
held through Sunday, November
17, at the Regency Hyatt House
in Atlanta.
Louis J. Fox, of Baltimore,
president of the Council, said
general meetings will be pre
ceded on Wednesday by execu
tive committee meetings and by
sessions of the Large City
Budgeting Conference.
“Jewish College Youth-1968”
will be the theme of a two-
session institute that will review
what Mr. Fox calls “the impact
of the changing needs of Jewish
college youth on Jewish commun
ity service programs. I’m afraid,”
he said, “that for too long, we in
the Jewish Federations and Wel
fare Funds have almost closed
our eyes to the particular needs
of our college youth, forgetting
that the future of the Jewish
community in America will be
shaped by the eighty per cent of
our Jewish youth of college age
who are now in universities
throughout the country.”
The major presentation on the
subject, “A Portrait of American
Jewish College Youth” will be
made by Dr. Leon A. Jick, director
of the Philip Lown Graduate
Center for Contemporary Jewish
Studies at Brandeis University.
Joseph Kruger, of Essex County,
N.J., is chairman of the Institute
on Jewish College Youth, and
Prof. Samuel Mantel, of Cleve
land, will serve as institute dis
cussion leader. This program has
been prepared in cooperation
with the B’nai B’rith Hillel
Foundation.
Also, beginning on Thursday,
there will be a session of the
“Young Leadership” group of the
GA. Among the many young
leaders participating, there will
be 75 outstanding young men
and women between the ages of
twenty-five and forty who have
won young leadership awards in
their respective communities
throughout the United States and
Canada. Three papers will be
presented and discussed on how
youth has been integrated into
the organized Jewish communal
structure in their hometown
Federations and Welfare Funds.
The papers will be presented by
Donald Kleiman, Indianapolis,
Irwin S. Field, Los Angeles, and
Robert Stern and Curtis Pontz
of Philadelphia. Discussants will
be Mendel Romm, Jr., and Elliot
H. Levitas, both of Atlanta, and
Allen Turner of Chicago. Henry
J. Goodman, of Cleveland, is
Chairman of the Council’s Na
tional Committee on Leadership
Development.
“One of the problems of all
communal organizations,” Mr.
Fox commented, “has been how
to integrate and activate young
leaders into the community pat
tern of service.” Himself one of
the earliest winners of a young
leadership award in Baltimore
some thirty years ago, Mr. Fox
said that "the continuing progress
and development of the Jewish
communal and welfare structure
in the United States has resulted
from the effective work in this
field that we have been sponsor
ing for over ten years.”
The problems of youth, both in
college and after graduation, are
a major aspect of the Assembly’s
consideration of the general
problem of strengthening and in
tensifying American Jewish life
and Jewish commitment and
identification through Jewish
