This is a Manuka story. It is
about one of the founding fa
thers of the Third Jewish Com
monwealth. You cannot make it
more topical.
On the 7th of November, there
appeared from the presses of the
Oxford University Press the first
volume of Chaim Weizmann's
letters. It is the opening volume
of a gigantic literary project
which will spread over some
thirty volumes and will take at
least a decade to complete. There
is drama and romance in the
story of this project—its histor
ical importance needs no stress
ing.
Dr. Chaim Weizmann carried
his charisma to the end. He lived
to be the first President of Israel.
Very few leaders achieve the
crowning glory. In our tradition,
Weizmann was unique. Moses did
not live to bring the Jews into
Canaan. David did not live to
build the Temple. Herzl did not
live even to see the Balfour Dec
laration issued. He would have
been only 57 had he lived. Weiz
mann was President of the Jew
ish State for over four years—a
good and full term by American
standards (1948-1952).
It was Dr. Weizmann himself
who instigated the collection of
his letters and papers in one
place—the Weizmann Institute at

Rehovot — and requested Meyer
W. Weisgal to take charge of
the project. Thus, Yad Chaim
Weizmann was bom, with the
Weizmann Archives as part of it.
Weisgal told me the other day
that he had not realized at the
time the scope of the enterprise.
He could not have and would not
have refused a request from his
chief and leader. But it took
twenty years to collect the letters
and papers, and eight years to
get the first volume ready. Weiz
mann spanned the whole era of
political Zionism—from the first
Zionist Congress to the birth of
the State. He led the Zionist
movemenet for some forty years.
But above all, he was Weizmann.
There was the Weizmann magic
and the Weizmann intellect; there
was the Weizmann philosophy
and the Weizmann wisdom. And
there was the Weizmann quality
of greatness which even his po
litical enemies freely acknow
ledged. All this is reflected in
his letters. He was a prolific let
ter writer—not given to writing
much else. He found an outlet and
a release in letters. He wrote
them to a variety of people in
Hebrew, Yiddish, English, Ger
man, French and Russian. He
sometimes inserted Yiddish
Weizmannisms into Russian or
English letters in order to make
his point or to make a joke.
There are well over 20,000 letters
—an inexhaustible source of his
tory and an illuminating guide to
the character of the man who was
not only the leader of the Zionist
movement in the most crucial
time of our history but also one
of the greatest men of the 20th
Century, according to the great
English historian, Sir Charles
Webster, a non-Jew and not
given to exaggeration.
