Children, said the teaoher, we
are now celebrating the Hanuka
holiday. All of you are familiar
with the story of Hanuka. It has
many lessons. I want each of you
to tell me, in his own way, what
most impresses you. The little
Hanuka lights glow in the dark
and talk to us. What do they say
to you? Raise your hands and tell
me.
Miriam: Well, teacher, Ant-
iochus wanted to destroy the
Jewish people and Jewish
religion. Instead, he himself
was defeated. It teaches us
that those who go about trying
to destroy others end up by des
troying themselves.
Teacher: Very good, Miriam.
Philip, you have your hand up.
Philip: Hanuka teaches us to be
brave and stand up for our rights,
like if someone tries to bully me,
I should not run away. The Jews
did not have the large armies
that their enemy had, but they
stood their ground and won.
Teacher: Very good, Philip. As
you say, Hanuka has a lesson not
only for a nation but for every
individual. Sam, I see your hand
is up. You have gone farther in
your studies than most of us.
You have even studied a little of
the Talmud. Tell us what the
Talmud says.
Sam: Well, I just want to en
large on what Philip said. In the
beginning, no one dared offer any
resistance to Antiochus. Then in
the little town of Modin, the Mac-
cabean family offered resistance
and others began to join them.
The Talmud says that “one can
dle lights another.”
Teaoher: That’s fine. I hope all
of you will remember that saying
from the Talmud, “One candle
lights another.” A person may
not be strong by himself but he
may inspire others and, together,
they become very strong. Now,
Joey, I see a smile on your face.
What does Hanuka teach you?
Joey: Hanuka teaches every
body to give Hanuka gelt to the
children.
Teacher: Well, that’s something
too. I am glad, Joey, you ap
preciate it. Milton, what does
Hanuka teach you?
Milton: Antiochus, the enemy
of the Jews, was a dictator. I
think the lesson of Hanuka Is
that democracy is the best gov
ernment and dictators are bound
to lose out.
Teaoher: Well said, Milton. Dic
tatorships generally have not
shown any great longevity. Sarah,
what do the Hanuka candles say
to you?
Sarah: I think candles are very
romantic. I think lovers should
always choose candles instead of
electric lights and I think love
is like that too. You must not
try to see each other’s weaknesses
Alivah Movement
Set Up In Britain
LONDON (JTA) — The organi
zation of the British Aliyah
Movement and its governing
principles were established here
at the closing session of a con
ference devoted to aliyah — im
migration to Israel — from Bri
tain. The movement was estab
lished in compliance with reso
lutions adopted at the 27th World
Zionist Congress in Jerusalem
last June.
The British Aliyah Movement
— the official title it adopted —
will consist of groups of 10 per
sons over the age of 18 who
pledge to settle in Israel within
three years. The pledge is re
newable each year and if not
carried out after three years will
result in the pledge being re
moved from membership lists of
the movement. The latter will
have no formal constitution for
the time being. A conference will
be called in three or four months
to elect officers. Each 10-member
group will send one delegate.
so much. You must have a little
light Instead, ao you cannot see
the little bad spots in each other,
and instead you see only the big
things that really count.
Teacher: Well, I never quite
expected such a lesson from the
Hanuka candles, but there is
quite a bit otf good philosophy in
what you say. There is a kind
"f poetry in the candles’ glow.
Shakespeare sensed it when he
wrote:
So shines a good deed in
a naughty world.”
Bernard: I think the story of
Hanuka is very much like the
story of the Six-Day War, so
Hanuka teaches us that history
repeats itself.
Teaoher: That Is very true. In
fact, you may go further and say
the story of Hanuka, of the Mao-
cabean struggle, served to Inspire
the whole Zionist movement
You know the first Zionist pub
lication in America was oallsd
“So far that little candle
throws Its beams
“The Maooabean.”
A Happy Hanuka
