cat.” And the only reason there
has been no riot or burning or
looting is because his people
want it that way. They want it
cool. The Jew, said Lester, is a
capitalist, and is exploiting the
black man. The young Black cat
sees the man (the Jew) beating
(gypping) his mother. He sees
prices higher. He sees Jewish
druggists selling barbiturates to
young black people. When it is
pointed out to Lester that the
American system is the capitalist

system and that it includes peo
ple other than Jews, he says he
knows all that. He knows of the
economic structure but the guy
on the corner sees only the Jew
ish merchant.
But do you tell them about the
big outfits, he was asked, owned
by Christians?
Sure, he says, but his people
know only what they see. You
get the impression talking to Les
ter, and listening, that the city
has within its confines thousands
of young black men ready at
short notice to turn to action; that
the forces of white power would
not be sufficient to contain such
action. But Lester, the militant,
maintains connection with the
Jewish community. “Beoause they
want to talk to me.” Neverthe
less, Lester believes the Jews
ought to make a direct grant to
the black community because of
all the money taken out of the
black areas over the years. But
like Father Washington, he feels
that nobody is listening to the
black man. And, he believes, the
frustration could set off trouble
some action. He wanted this mes
sage brought back to the Jewish
community.
Because his people, he said, are
not passive like the Jews in
Germany were.
What about the Israelis, he was
asked.
Israel, he said, doesn’t belong
in Africa.

PRIVATE PARTIES AND TAKE OUT SERVIC
But Israel is not Africa, it was
suggested. And the point is that
the Israelis are not passive. You
look down on the Jews, he was
told, because they were passive,
but you don’t admire them for
defending themselves successfully
against the Arabs. He was re
minded that Eldridge Cleaver
said the Jews and the Arabs
could live together if the big
powers left them alone.
But you get the impression
there is more than misunder
standing here. There is a totally
different approach to reality, the
patois of militance expresses a
hidden reality, one with which
the white, and the Jewish com
munity, has no continguity, des
pite the contact in neighbor
hoods.
For instance, Lester was more
concerned with the idea that the
Jews in Germany wanted to be
come Germans and here they
wanted to become capitalists. But
they are also Americans, he was
told. He shook his head and said,
“What’s an American?” As if the
concept did not exist, nor the
reality. He defined a capitalist
as one who exploits. And went
back to the idea of money being
returned to the black commun
ity by the Jewish organizations.
He pointed out that there is in
Philadelphia a Black Community
Council composed of some fifty
organizations. “You police your
people,” he said, “and we’ll
police ours.” But in the back cf
your mind there is the statement
made by an official of the city
government of New York that
the black community is not orga
nized, that it is proliferated, that
they cannot, for instance, mount
any mass demonstrations. They
only can produce a hard, mili
tant and vocal core.
But Lester was saying, sudden
ly, “What you want from me,
Man?”
Just this, he was told, these
questions, these answers which
would be communicated to the
Jewish community.
He didn’t buy that. “You just
want some entertainment.”
You define entertainment for
him as something other than
talking to a black militant about
anti-Semitism. He didn’t buy
that either. “You don’t care what
a white man says?” he was ask
ed.
He shook his head. “I’m get
ting a lunch,” he said.
But he was gentle to the
waitress, and polite, and when
he was told there has been a
prior meeting with Father Wash
ington, a sudden vulnerability
thing, him and me?”
You couldn’t answer that. To
do so might be a violation of con
fidence, and he ought to know
that. But you did add that Fa
ther Washington was a gentle
person. Lester’s eyes widened,
“Man, I have been gentle too.”
And he insisted on know
ing if there were a similarity
in views. The hard put-on
melted here somewhat, be
cause now he wanted some
thing. And you told him there
were many similarities in
their ideas. And then the hard
front returned. He was a man
who had been all over and had
experienced many things, not all
good. He knew trouble, he said.
For a moment, there was a break
in the talk and the pictures on
the wall came into focus. Lew
Tendler, hero to the Jewish boys
of Philadelphia in the twenties.
Benny Leonard, the champion,
hero to the Jewish boys over the
country during the same time.
Another time, another set of
heroe*.
What about the young black
woman? you ask.
“Our secret weapon,” he said,
with an almost smile.
Outside, on a sun-drenched
street, Lester shook hands.
“Next time you come to Phila
delphia, holler, hear?”
He walked south. To the north,
Broad Street was straddled by
the Old City Hall. To the east—
Independence Hall, housing the
Liberty Bell which had cracked
on the first sounding.
