The tenth; man stubbornly|| refused to aban-P don Kafi and) remained alonej T e chnically, iljj seems, he has i n h e r ited thel party and cer-l tain political andl financial advan tages which go with it. The man is David Ben- Gurion. When elections are held next fall Ben-Gurion will be 83. He has not yet decided whether he will stand for re-election, but if he does it will be as a one-man candidate, he says, unconnected with any other parties. That he is still actively inter ested in politics is obvious from his frequent public appearances. He is interviewed on radio pro grams. He lectures at forums. He receives press correspondents. And of course Ben-Gurion always has striking ideas which com mand attention. In recent appearances he con tinues to emphasize his principal contention: that in the long run Israel's security depends on im migration. Constantly he warns that even without war we can be overwhelmed by a growing Arab population unless our num bers increase. He has strong views regarding the treatment of captured ter rorists. Since their avowed pur pose is genocide, they should be given the punishment provided by Israel law for this crime— the death penalty. A few execu tions, he feels, will discourage some of the rash young Arabs who are willing to risk imprison ment for the sake of being heroes. Asked by a reporter from the daily Hayom what he thought of Abba Eban, -Ben-Gurion replied: “Eban is highly gifted if given explicit instructions. I would not rely on him to establish policy. There is no one like him to exe cute policy. He has the power of persuasion.” With respect to Levi Eshkol, B. G. has strong, sometimes un printable views: Eshkol must go. He is not fit to govern the coun try. Israel must have a govern ment that leads. It must be a government worthy of the nation. He is notoriously stubborn, but does not make a fetish of con sistency. Today he is on friendly terms with his erstwhile opponent, Menahem Begin. He is still in the central stream of public life. He retains a wide following, and despite his in dividualistic tendencies, has enor mous influence. Yet he feels his immediate responsibility is as historian and chronicler. He has just finished two histories, one the story of the Jewish people, and the other a history of the State. He is busily working on his memoirs, and looks forward to many more fruitful years of creative writing. In the meantime he has co operated with a film company which is making a motion pic ture of his life. Bill Moves to Aid Vandalized Churches And Institutions ALBANY (JTA)—A bill that would make provision for finan cial assistance to religious insti tutions damaged by vandalism or destroyed by arsonists has been introduced in the New York State Legislature by Assemblyman Ste phen Solarz, a Brooklyn Demo crat. Mr. Solarz said his measure would create a million dollar, in terest-free loan fund from which tax exempt institutions, including houses of worship, oould borrow and repay over 10 years at the rate of 10 percent each year. The legislator said his bill was prompted by the recent rash of synagogue burnings and acts of vandalism against religious insti tutions which resulted in prop erty losses in the millions of dol lars. He said he also supported efforts to make certain that per sons convicted of vandalism or arson against religious institutions “will be punished to the full ex tent of the law.” since his wife died last year. Paula used to shield him from pneces sary intrusions and watched over his health. Secret Service men still keep a close eye on him. Active, mentally alert, physi cally fjt, Ben-Gurion belies his 82 years. In the crucial months ahead he will speak up on issues and problems of the day, usually with an unorthodox approach. More, much more heard from him. will yet be THINKING of Travel? jjffe Think of The Travel Mart 11 Pryor St., 8.W., Suit* 406 524 - 0411 Irvin Frankol Larry 6oldb#rg PASSOVER AT THE C0HC0RD Wed.-Thurs., April 2-10 Cantor Herman Malamood Assisted by Sholom Secunda And the Concord International Choir Services • Sedarim Dietary Supervision by Rabbi Seymour Freedman VliA traditional ceietdation ojf the cjlorioiti l&itioal j/ieedom.
