Jewish Welfare Fund Combined
Goal for 1969 Is $335,000
for Annual Jewish Welfare Campaign
The 1969 Jewish Welfare Fund
Campaign here scheduled Feb
ruary 4 through March 12, has
set a Combined Goal of $335,000,
Ted Robbins, general chairman
of the Campaign has announced.
The funds raised by the cam
paign will be divided between the
Jewish Welfare Federation reg
ular campaign which seeks $165,-
000 for its work in 41 overseas,
national and local agencies and
the United Jewish Appeal Emer
gency Fund, which seeks $170,-
000 for its rescue, relief, and re
construction programs of social
welfare programs in Israel and
30 other countries around the
world.
Some of the high-priority areas
for which the campaign funds
will be earmarked are: Because
of the critical situation in the
Middle East and because the
Arab nations refuse to make
peace, virtually all of Israel’s
resources must be spent to de
fend her people. The defense
budget of Israel for 1969-will con
sume 20% of her entire Gross
National Product. This is clearly
a tremendous burden on the peo
ple and economy of Israel. There
is practically nothing left over
for the social services which
make life meaningful.
The cost of these social serv
ices for the people of Israel Rob
bins said, “in the areas of health,
education, welfare, housing, im
migration and absorption—areas
which have been the traditional
responsibilities of Jewish philan
thropy—will total $365,000,000 in
1969.
It is anticipated that the num
ber of new immigrants during
1969 will be more than 30,000
persons, which is a considerable
increase over 1968. Social serv
ices are being frozen at 1968
levels. All 'hospitals building as

natal and infant welfare clinics,

is no money available. It is es
