Speaks To Bnai B rith
Dr. A. J. Kravtin, president of
the Georgia State Association of
B’nai B’rith, has announced that
U. S. Senator Herman Talmadge
of Geprgia will be the guest
speaker at the installation ban
quet for Ben Hyman, incoming
president of the B’nai B’rith Or
ganization in Georgia at the
Rod^way Inn on March 1.0 at 7:.i0
p. m.
Senator Talmadge, in accepting
this speaking engagement, ex
pressed his warm and sincere in
terest in meeting with and speak
ing to his many friends in B’nai
B’rith in Georgia. His topic will
be “The Tense Situation in the
Middle East.” Elmo Ellis, a well-
known, local, radio personality
and member of the Atlanta Lodge
of B’nai B’rith, will deliver the
introductory address to the as
semblage.

SENIOR FRIENDSHIP NEWS

A blistering discussion has been
taking place in the Sunshine City
over the cancellation of “School
Daze” by the executive board of
Senior Friendship Club. How
ever, ticket purchasers have been
turning in their tickets and
donating the money to the Jew-
wish Community Center, while a
very small percentage have ask
ed for a refund. All refund re
quests have been granted.
Excitement runs high as the
membership of SF Club awaits
the report of the nominating
committoc’s choice of a new slate
of officers at the membership
meeting scheduled for Monday,
March. 3. Maxwell Erlich, first
vice president and chairman of
the board, has announced that he
is not a candidate for the office
of president, and in the office of
second vice president Adele Las-
day has not announced her inten
tions and under precedence the
announcement of Mr. Erlich
would advance her to the top of
fice. However, the nominating
committee has held many meet
ings and their decision will be
made known on March 3. At this
same meeting the members will
have the opportunity of also
naming a slate of officers from
the floor and if this does take
place the coming election will be
held by secret ballot. If this oc-

curs it will be the first time in
the history of the Club that a
slate was elected to office by
ballot.
The Combined Jewish Cam
paign got under way in the SF
Club this week with Jennie Tin
kle appointed as chairman of the
collection committee.
Nettie Benjamin, mother ot

Community Council, left for San
Francisco late last week to at
tend the wedding of her grand-
f*on.
May Robbins will remain in
St. Anthony’s Hnsnital for at
least another two weeks. Late
last week she had surgery on her
left eye for the removal of a
cataract and next week she will
undergo surgery for the removal
of a cataract in her right eye.
Ruth Oppenheim, visiting her
sister in New Haven, has been
hospitalized and is reported in
fair condition. Friends may write

Molly Bauman fell last week in
her home town of Oconto Falls,
Wis., and suffered a broken hip.
Harry and Molly Bauman have
been in a rest home in Oconto
Falls for the past eight months.

Gertrude Lichton was removed
in an emergency last week to St.
Anthony’s Hospital. She is un
dergoing numerous tests and
x-rays in an effort to locate the
disturbance.

Speaks at College
Rabbi Randall M. Falk of the
Temple. Nashville, was guest
lecturer on behalf of the Jewish
Chautauqua Society at Tennessee
Wesleyan College, Athens, Tonn.,
on February 25. His subject was
“The Holocaust Literature — Its
Meaning for Our *Times.”

Annenberg Named
To British Envoy

President Nixon appointed a Jew
this week as United States Am
bassador to the Court of St.
James. Walter II. Annenberg
was named Ambassador to Brit
ain.
The 60-year-old publisher, who
has had no previous diplomatic
experience, was expected to go
to his post, following Senate
confirmation, upon Mr. Nixon’s
rturn from his coming European
trip.

Jake Schwartz
“Yank” Jake Schwartz, 69, of
Savannah died Wednesday, Feb.
19.
Funeral services were held
February 20, with interment in
Hillcrest Ahby.
Mr. Schwartz operated a pop
ular cigar store and lunch coun
ter called “Yanks” for a number
of years. He started in the cigar
store field as a boy in 1915 with
the United Cigar Co. He closed
his own cigar store, which was
popular among sports enthusi
asts as ticket headquarters for
local sports events, in 1946 after
10 years in the business. It had
been called Mose and Yank’s un
til 1939.
Mr. Schwartz, a native of Sa
vannah, was a member of the
Mickve Israel Temple and a 30-
year member of the Elks Club.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Ethel Linder Schwartz;
three sisters, Mrs. J. A. Weil,
Mrs. Ray Beasley and Mrs. Helen
Perlman, all of Savannah, and
a number of nieces and nephews.
Cy Span
Cy Span, 73, of Savannah died
Friday, Feb. 21.
Funeral services were held
February 24 with Rabbi R. Sid
ney Solomon officiating. Inter
ment was in Bonaventure Ceme
tery.
A native of Savannah, Mr.
Span was a retired contractor
and architect. He w’as a mem
ber of Agudath Achim Syna
gogue and B’nai B’rith.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Helen H. Span; two sisters,
Mrs. Mose Berman of Savannah
and Mrs. Ben I. Stegall of At
lanta, and several nieces and
nephews.
Mrs. Rae Wonder
Mrs. Rae Hirsh Wonder of At
lanta died Sunday, Feb. 23, in
Long Island, N. Y.
Funeral services were held
February 25 with Rabbi Harry
H. Epstein and Cantor Isaac
Goodfriend officiating. Inter
ment was in Greenwood Ceme
tery.
Mrs. Wender, a native of At
lanta, was the widow of Sam
M. Wender. She was a member
of Ahavath. Achim Synagogue,
its Sisterhood and of Hadassah.
Survivors include three daugh
ters, Mrs. Eleanor Feinberg,
Long Island: Mrs. Oscar Cohn,
Alexander City, Ala., and Mrs.
Gerald Rabushka, St. Louis; a
sister. Miss Anne Hirsh, Atlanta,
and a brother, Sam M. Hirsh,
San Antonio, Tex.; six grand
children, one great-grandchild
and nieces and nephews.

Marion Poliakoff. 61, of Wal-
halla. S. C., died Sunday, Feb.
16, in Abbeville, S. C.

Monday, Feb. 17. Interment was
in Aiken.
Survivors include his wife,

Mrs. Lillian Levin Levy, 76, of
Atlanta, died Friday, Feb. 21.

Mrs. Levy was a retired part
ner in the Southern Sanitary Co.

Long Island, N.Y.; sisters, Mrs.

David I. Kaplan of Atlanta
died February 18.

Mr. Kaplan, a women’s wear
buyer for Sears, Roebuck and
Co., was a native of Sandersville
and a member of the Temple.
Survivors include his wife,
the former Frances Asher; a
daughter, Daryl Rose Kaplan;
three sisters, Mrs. Alvin Minsk,
Mrs. Lillian Beeber, both of At
lanta, and Mrs. Jerry Feldman,
Long Island. N. Y.; two brothers,
Eli and Abe Kaplan, both of
Atlanta.

Isaac Simmons Jr. of Augusta
died Sunday, Feb. 16.

A native of Augusta, he had
lived there all his life.

Sam Housner
Sam Housner. 89, of Atlanta
died February 22.

February 24 in Crest Lawn Mem
orial Park with Rabbi Emanuel
Feldman officiating.
Mr. Housner was the retired
owner of Housner Shows, one of
the largest carnival shows in the
country. He was a native of
Australia and retired about 10
years ago.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Ruth Housner.
Philip Benson
Philip Benson, 76. of 'Atlanta
died Monday, Feb. 17.
Funeral services were held

Mr. Benson, a resident of At
lanta for 59 years, was a native
of Lithuania. He came to the
United States in 1910 and had
been retired from retail mer
chandising for several years. He
was a member of Ahavath
Achim Synagogue.

former Frances Heilman; two
sons. Benjamin B. Benson of At
lanta and Raymon H. Benson,
Columbia. S. C.; a daughter, Mrs.
Mathias Beerman, Orlando, and
a sister, Mrs. Sonja Reichlin,
Johannesburg, South Africa.
