THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE

Panorama .... By David Schwartz
Forbidden bruit
This old earth may seem tull
of turbulence but to the astro
nauts sailing around the moon,
it appeared like an oasis and they
turned to the Old Testament to
read how God made the world
and how He looked at it and
said “it is good.”
We seem in many ways to b«
going back to the days of the
creation of the world. We are all
looking for the Garden of Eden.
The Communists say they have
found it. It’s in Moscow, they
say. Just join the Party. The stu
dent rioters say, all you need to
find it is to get a hatchet and
start knocking everything down.
The Democrats say their system
of Social Security will bring it
about and the Republicans are
still counting on free enterprise
to do the trick.
Adam and Eve, of course, had
social security and everything
nice, but it seems that they were
still unsatisfied. The first of the
month would come around, Eve
would go to the door and she
would see the postman had al
ready passed the house. No mail
from anyone. At least, on the

first of the month she would say,
he could have brought a bill. But
there were no bills. And I wish,
she would say, there were some
department stores so I could re
turn some of the clothes I
bought. And then she reminded
herself that she had no clothes
to return. Here I am, she would
say, going around naked, and I
am not even in a Broadway
show.
The serpent started coming
around. Eve didn’t like him
much but she was attracted by
his walk. He had a sexy way
of zig-zagging around. He kept
showing Eve an apple.
No, she would say, I am on
a diet. I’ve got to lose five
pounds. But the serpent would
keep at it. You know, Eve, he
would say, "an apple a day
keeps the doctor away.”
Then the serpent thought up
a trick way to win Eve over. He
realized how everyone is tempt-
,ed to do a forbidden thing, so
now whenever he mentioned the
apple, he always brought that
in.
I kno\fr, he would say, why
you won’t eat the apple. It’s be
cause it is forbidden. You are
one of those conformists who are
afraid of doing anything on your
own. You are afraid of being an
individual.
By making the apple seem for
bidden, Eve began to want to
eat it more and more and finally
she broke down and ate it. And
she persuaded Adam also to
have an apple.
It was then that they were
cast out of the Garden of Eden.
Eve then invented the mini-skirt
—the fig leaf. When she first put
it on Adam was horrified. Take
it off, he said, It’s immoral.
Actually the Bible makes no
mention of any apple In con
nection with Adam and Eve. That
•lory must have been started by
the Citrus Growers Association
to give the apple a black eye.
The Bible speaks of forbidden
fruit—fruit of the Tree of Know
ledge. That makes great sense.
Not all the fruit of the Tree
of Knowledge is forbidden, but
some of the fruit is very dan
gerous and society today recog
nizes this as never before. Tech
nology is causing us to pollute
our air, our waters and our
•oil.
And the more of the Tree of
Knowledge we learn, the greater
our Instruments of destruction
become.
We may pray to be delivered
from this forbidden fruit.
