the respective schools,” it was
announced by Hans Erman, exe
cutive director of the Atlanta
Bureau of Jewish Education.
Mr. Erman pointed out that
the school campaign is designed
to run parallel to the commun
ity-wide fund-raising campaign
conducted by the Atlanta Jewish
Welfare Federation, but added
that the emphasis in the school
project is placed on the educa
tional aspects of teaching the
concept of Tsedakah — charity —
and that the fund-raising element
is of a secondary nature.
Since the main objective of
our religious schools consists in
the transmission of the Jewish
heritage, the concept of Tsedak
ah, representing one of the high
est ideals in Judaism, must be
part and parcel of every religious
school curriculum, Mr. Erman
explained.
To teach this concept the
Bureau of Jewish Education
recommends the “Learning by
Doing” method as the most
promising approach. Consequent
ly, teachers are urged to familiar
ize their classes with the prob
lems of today and to sensitize
the students to the pressing
needs of our people in Atlanta,
in the United States and over
seas.
Hopefully, when today’s chil
dren grow up to become the
Jewish community of tomorrow,
they will retain and further de
velop a creative awareness of
those needs and continue to sup
port Jewish life and Jewish in
stitutions.
For the effective implementa
tion of the project, campaign kits
were prepared by the Bureau of
Jewish Education and distribut
ed to the schools along with
pertinent teaching aids.

paign motto “Israel Must Live",

on the campaign in particular,
has been designed by the Bureau
of Jewish Education. In addition,
a brochure for younger children
entitled “The Helping Hand” is
being used for students in the
primary grades of every school.
To facilitate the teachers’ les
son planning, a book entitled
Tsedakah — A Way of Life,
edited by Azriel Eisenberg, has
been made available to the fa
culties of the schools. In addition
to appropriate stories on topics
such as charitable deeds and
loving kindness, the book con
tains a concise history of Jewish
philanthropic thought and prac
tices from Biblical times to the
manyfold operations of a modern
Jewish Federation.
The following schools are par
ticipating this year in the cam
paign: Ahavath Achim, Beth
Jacob, Central Hebrew High
School, the Temple, Hebrew
Academy, Or Ve-Shalom, Shea-
rith Israel, Temple Sinai. In ad
dition, the Jewish Youth Council
of Atlanta has also incorporated
the campaign in its ongoing pro
gram.
Parents are urged to increase
their childrens’ allowance dur
ing the current month in order
to encourage them to pledge
generously to this campaign.
