When your car tails to start
you may get disgusted, but
when your car fails to stop
you may get hurt. The cost
of keeping your brakes in
first class completely depend
able condition is trifling in
comparison with the cost of
even a minor accident. That’s
why it makes sense to insist
on nothing but the best brake
maintenance.
Genuine Star brake renewal
service is the lowest cost
insurance you can buy.

HEBREW PASSAGES—
Surinam Slumps
Honor 17th
Century Synagogue
UNITED NATIONS (WUP) —
It' was learned here this week
that Surinam — an autonomous
part of the Netherlands realm
and the former Dutch Guiana in
the West Indies — has issued a
commemorative set of three
postage stamps marking the
restoration of a 17th-century
synagogue and other monuments
at Joden Savanne, a plantation
town on the Surinam River south
of Paramaribo the capital.
The three denominations in
clude:
20 cents: This shows a map of
the Joden Savanne area, with
the estates dating from the 17th
century indicated. Across the
bottom of the stamp is a text in
Hebrew from Joshua 24:2 which,
translated, reads: “Your fathers
dwelt on the other side of the
flood in old time.”
25 cents: This stamp has a view
of the Joden Savanne settlement,
including the synagogue, as it
was in 1685. The biblical text,
again in Hebrew, from Isaiah
56:7, is “Mine House Shall Be
Called a House of Prayer . . .”
30 cents: This carries the pic
ture of an elaborately detailed
gravestone from a cemetery near
Joden Savanne. Dated 1733, it
features angels and a skull and
crossbones. The Hebrew text,
Genesis 31:52, is "And this Pillar
Be Witness.”
These unusual stamps on a re
ligious Hebraic theme recognize
the role played by Jewish settlers
in Surinam as long ago as the
17th century.

andre, however, plans to remain
for several additional weeks.
HONORING APPOLLO 8—
U.S. To Issue
Stamp Containing
Opening of Genesis
WASHINGTON (WUP) —
Postmaster General Winton M.
Blount has announced that the
new commemorative 6-cent post
age stamp to be issued on May 5
in Houston — site of the U.S.
Space Center — will contain the
opening words f>f Genesis, “In
the beginning, God . . .”
The decision to include the
words from the Hebrew Bible,
the Postmaster-General stated,
resulted from the many requests
his office had received from
Americans who were inspired by
the astronauts’ reading of the
first verses of Genesis while
circling the moon last December.
The new stamp will bear a
reproduction of one of the photo
graphs of the earth which the
astronauts shot from the vant
age-point of the moon.

Shazar and Leading Israelis
Honor Noted Archaeologist
JERUSALEM (WUP) — Dr.
William Foxwell Albright, world
famous archaeologist, was highly
honored here in Israel recently
by President Zalman Shazar, the
Mayor of this capital, Dr. Yigal
Yadin and other leading Israeli
personalities.
Having arrived in Israel on
Monday, March 10, with a group
of archaeologists to attend a
Consortium Conference spon
sored by the Hebrew Union Col
lege Biblical and Archaeological
School here, Dr. Albright was
given a special reception by
President Shazar 6n Thursday
the 13th — designated “Albright
Day” as arranged in cooperation
with the Israel Exploration ^So
ciety — at which he was pre
sented with a special citation.
Among those present at the
Shazar reception were Dr. Ben-
yamin Mazar, Dr. Nelson Glueck,
Dr. Yigal Yadin, Dr. G. Ernest
Wright, and many others. Dr.
Emanuel Alexandre, who arrived
with the group from the United
States and who is an outstanding
student of archaeology and He-
braica, represented the Ameri
can Friends of the Israel Explo
ration Society whose chairman is
Dr. Harry M. Orlinsky.
Prof. Albright was also award
ed the title of “The Worthy of
Jerusalem” — one of the highest
honors conferred by the Jeru
salem Municipality and the first
ever to be bestowed on a non-
Jew or a person living abroad.
In its decision, the Municipal
Executive noted that Dr. Albright
had been one of the founders of
the systems of archaeological,
historical and geographical re
search in the area. He is re
nowned for his classic treatise
“The Archaeology of Palestine.”
He has headed expeditions at
Givat Shaul, Dvir, Beit Tzur, and
at one time he served as Director
of the American School of Orien
tal Research in this city. Bom in
Chile in 1891, Albright is pro
fessor emeritus at Johns Hopkins
University and currently resides
in Baltimore. His previous visit
in Israel was in 1953.
After visiting and exploring
the most famous archaeological
sites in the country, the group
planned to return to the U. S. on
Monday, March 24. Dr. Alex-
