When The Lie Is Taster Than Truth
HAIFA—I was in Switzerland
very recently when the Arab
commandos attacked the El AI
plane in Zurich. As a result I
■was able to ob
serve at first j
hand not only the?'
usual press, ra
dio and TV cov
erage to be ex
pected in the
very country
where the inci
dent took place,
but also the dis
turbing opera-|
lions of the A Ipert
Arab propaganda machine.
The Arabs had carefully plann
ed not only the attack on the
plane, but also the public rela
tions campaign to be set in mo
tion as a consequence of that act
of violence. In the first few hours
following the raid, all Switzer
land, and all of Europe, was agog
with interest. The public clam
ored for details, news and more
details. The elementary facts of
the attack were quickly told.
More! The Arabs met this news
void with a long statement of ex
planation and justification. It had
obviously been prepared In ad
vance, and was available immed
iately to all the news media.
With a group of Israelis I sat
at the TV screen that very even
ing. All of us were indignant and

aghast as the news announcer
read out page after page of anti-
Israel diatribe. The terrorists
were pictured as liberty-loving
martyrs seeking to free their peo
ple from the bloody tyranny of
a colonialist power. Any means
were permissible to heroes like
these.
By the following day there was
more information, condemnations,
Israeli reactions and details. But
in those first six hours the Arabs
scored a tremendous propaganda
success. All Europe went to sleep
that night, having been a willing,
even eager -audience to a full dose
of Arab claims and propaganda.
The airport mission had succeed
ed in its primary aim.
The following morning a friend
got into a Geneva taxicab. The
driver looked at the headlines of
the morning paper and remark
ed: “They killed a man. poor fel
low!”
Does Israel put as much ad
vance thought and preparation
into the presentation of its case
to the public as it does into the
physical planning of the reprisal
itself? Our justification and ex
planations, although logical and
convincing, always seem to limp
belatedly into the news too late
to capitalize on the first impact
of the event, and frequently after
Arab distortions have already
been distributed. We can not rely
on truth to overcome lies if truth
comes late and if lies are bold
and dramatic. It would appear
that our public relations arm is
usually as surprised as everyone
else by some Israeli action.
In the days following the Zur
ich attack the UN Commission on
Human Rights was meeting In
Geneva. I saw the material cir
culated by the Arabs among all
the participating members. It was
a series of hair-raising charges
against Israel. Civilian Gaza had
been transformed into a battle
field according to these accounts.
Women and children were being
shot down by the hundreds by
the blood-thirsty Israeli barbar
ians. Massacres had become a
daily occurrence. The Big Lie was
being wielded with a vengeance.
What denials could ever effec
tively eliminate the efforts of
this effluence of sewage spewed
Into the communications channels
of a UN agency?
Obviously, in the war of prop
aganda the offensive lies with
the Arabs. It was a sobering and
thought-provoking week for me.
